Re: Second Hand Ultimat Gold price
Thanks Prospero, Also - do I really need one? I only make frames for myself and as gifts, but I want them to be as good as possible. I currently have a Logan Simplex Elite, but I don't like the mdf board, which I have already damaged slightly, and get some hooking etc when cutting thicker mounts. Th...

Second Hand Ultimat Gold price
Hi all, It's been ages since I've been here! I have the opportunity to buy an ultimat gold mount cutter from a local framer who is shutting down. It was purchased second hand by them, and I believe it has some slight issues with not squaring properly, which I hope would be fixable. Is £500 a good pr...

Antique frame dating
IMG_2219.JPG Hi all, I've been buying things again! Picked up these two framed eighteenth century Bartolozzi engravings today. Just wondering if anyone has a view on whether they are likely to be original frames, or period repro? There's a sticker inside from E Stacey Marks who I presume did the Ve...

Re: Removing old gold paint
Thanks Richard, Yes, I wasn't convinced by its age, but it's a nice wee frame. In the end I've just regilded it as although nitromors worked it was impossible to get out from all the details. Be interested to see that Frinton frame, unfortunately I can't find it on their new website, Thanks, Graham

Re: Removing old gold paint
Thanks for the suggestions. Acetone works a bit, but not great. Turpentine and white spirit don't work either. Time to try something even stronger...

Removing old gold paint
Hi all, it's been a while since I've been here, but I have a new gilding project to work on. I've just bought this frame which is apparently late 18th/early 19th century French. It's been historically overpainted with gold paint which I would like to remove to see what the original gilding is like. ...

Re: Gilding over cast resin
Thanks ever so much both! Dermot, I meant to say I was going to sand the flat part, which I've tried before with mixed success, but I've never tried your method. Also the tip for putting shellac on before oil gilding is very useful: I've not had much luck with oil gilding before, but that may be the...

Gilding over cast resin
Hi all, and a Merry Christmas to you all! It's been a while since I've been here, but I'm back making frames. I have one I've been slowly working on for quite some time now. It's a version of a Kit Kat club frame, which is mainly constructed from pine with applied cast resin decoration. It will be g...

Re: Recommendations for spraying gesso
Thanks very much for the advice.
I bought a cheapy Sealey HVLP sprayer and tried it out at the weekend. After some faffing around with the controls, the results were pretty good: didn't clog up, and should be far less sanding to do. Bit noisy though, sounds like an unhappy vacuum cleaner!

Recommendations for spraying gesso
Hi all, I've seen examples of people having used sprayguns to apply gesso to frames. I'd like to try it out, but am loath to pay for a full compressor kit. There seem to be some fairly cheap HVLP kits available, e.g. http://www.spraygunsdirect.co.uk/product.php?tid=218&products_id=5588 but I'm n...

Re: Water gilding metal leaf
Thanks Ally,
Well, I've done a small test piece, and it seems to work well (and even burnishes to a nice shine). So why do all the books say it's not possible?

Water gilding metal leaf
Now, I always thought it wasn't possible to water gild with metal leaf, but apparently Larsen-Juhl Senelar mouldings are done that way. Has anyone had experience of doing this? Also, if anyone could recommend a particularly good supplier of metal leaf, that would be great. As much as I love real gol...

Yep, Rose and Hollis are great. No minimum order as such, and always dispatch quickly. I wish they had a website though!

Aah! A router! I did wonder whether it was best to just plant them on, but that's given me something to think about. I've just got in some new, fairly plain Rose and Hollis mouldings, so they will be perfect.

books
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone had any top tips for books on the history of frames and frame design? I already have Paul Mitchell and Lynn Roberts
A History of European Picture Frames, but was rather disappointed that it was mainly line drawings, with very few photos of full frames.

Vintageframes, these are great!009 in particular is lovely. Do you happen to have photos of them used on frames? I'll be making some frames over xmas, so will no doubt order some early in the new year.

varnish for oil paint
Hi all, This might be slightly off-topic, but hopefully you can help me. I've just painted a couple of previously painted table lamps with some little greene oil paint that I added some powdered pigment to. It's not adhered wonderfully well - it scratches off quite easily. Can anyone recommend a goo...
