Re: Mounting Board for Large Photographs

Drytac do somethign called "artsafe 2000" approved by british museums so something like that, or con-R archival adhesive may work well to stick them down. Rollataq adhesive is easy to apply and acid-free. Some kind of starch paste maybe from an archival angle. If the drymount tissue has an...

Re: Why aren't my web visitors calling me?!?

"and a frame which has been given individual with care and attention" You seem to have made a careless mistake in the sentence where you are describing your care and attention which may put some people off. Otherwise your site is quite nice looking compared to most of the competition. A ch...

Re: How to attach a fillet into a window mount?

We have one of those quick measuring devices. A fair whack but worth it if you do many. Some bits are a bit plaggy and I noticed one of the staff have broken it somewhere down the line but it still works. For slips plastic is quite good e.g. Lion Minerva which is sold in lengths, as it joins very ea...

Re: Dry mounting onto Foamex

Anything you are sticking to foamex is unlikely to be of high value. Cold mount or glue it I would say if for indoor. There would be less waste and less need to worry about lumps caused by specks of debris. You could laminate the item first in the press. Just for the beginners I'll state that Foamex...

A friend is a freelance graphic designer.

A lady rang him up to say she wanted a logo designing.......... how does she do it?

We are not alone. She wasn't even from a charity.

Re: IKEAAAARGH

The original poster has taken a bit of stick here for a very understandable opinion in the heat of Xmas. As they implied they have probably said yes to so many people who may not even appreciate that the end of the tether is close or what is being done for them. I think they were willing also to do ...

Re: How's Business Been In 2012?

Start-ups would expect to grow more quickly than established businesses. We are into the 6th year and have maintained a good level of growth and quickly filling out our third premises. We grew 315% in the second year and 70% in the third but after a while that would become nearly impossible in what ...

Re: Deadlines for accept Christmas framing orders.

last couple of years Chris Evans has been on the radio saying it's too late to go to the framers on Dec 1st. I don't know if that's good or bad for the rest of us but it shows many people do stop. It's going to depend on what type of business you have isn't it. A reasonably remote shop with high pri...

Re: Glass for special certificate

When we last framed an OBE medal we photoed the certificate and printed it off so the original could be retained in safe storage. That was cheaper than museum glass. Artglass or Claryl/Clarity is perhaps best for presentation, museum glass for conservation but you pay extra. Museum glass also has pu...

Re: VAT question

Admittedly income tax keeps going up in bands - but then so do business overheads so no need for VAT to. I just think everybody should have a "personal allowance" as the guys doign £80k a year are really worse off (not an unusual kind of turnover for a small frame shop).

Re: VAT question

I would wait till you have to - it's extra hassle and something you can be inspected for. Personally I think everybody should be able to keep their first 72k turnover VAT and only reclaim inputs after 1 third of this. That would encourage growth more and not penalise success. I don't think anybody s...

Re: Frame over three metres long

We have made 2.4m frames with mounts, and 6m canvases. There is nearly always a way. I'd agree with the need to charge a premium, though up to now we generally haven't - more thought of it as valuable learning but I thought the 6m canvas would take an hour or two. In the end I had to visit the clien...

Re: Bank want £10k deposit to open account!

Some farmers have it easy it seems, some very hard. Most have an asset they can easily sell or diversify and now they have a government who will look after them. Frankly I don't think most people would pay over odds for milk - though many will for free range eggs. Maybe we need a "fairtrade&quo...

I thought they were getting better this yearbut we've hit a few issues again lately. It's either 6 weeks on the boat from china, or now italians slow. In Spain according to our spanish employee they also often get paid double on holiday - so no wonder they are struggling even more! 40 customers wait...

Please message or e-mail me as opposed to replying to this thread which I may miss and is too public. When we don't hav...
