Re: framing courses

I know a lot of people on here look down their nose at DIY Framing, but they do some reasonable courses showing you the basics. I know a few framers who started with them. I think they have some courses in Manchester in October.

Re: Ashamed to accept Visa shop

Apologies for the title - the Olympics is being sponsored by Visa so you can't pay with mastercard, amex etc and they have "proud to accept only visa" posted everywhere, which I think is probably against the competition act and is incredibly annoying. I've seen atrocious framing in quite a few ...

Ashamed to accept Visa shop

We went to the Olympic shop in Hyde Park today and there is an art gallery attached. Fot the prices they are charging, the quality of the framing is terrible. Corners don't match up properly, they've used plastic moulding and some of the mounts are ragged as though they've been cut with a blunt ...

shinty sticks

We've been given 2 shinty sticks to frame, including a shirt where mainly the logos need to show (both arms, breast) and programmes which need to be able to be changed every year.

Any ideas (some slowly germinating) gratefully received

Framiac pricing software

Does anyone have experience of this. Smudges Mum sat through a demo of it today and was prety impressed, but I'd like to get some opinions of people who have used it before we take the plunge.

Re: Spring Fair 2012.... What Are You Going for?

We'll start at the framing section on Sunday morning, I'll be trying to stop Smudges Mum from spending too much (last year she got a32" Hot press thingy) as she's got her eye on a cmc.

The we'll spend the next 3 days looking for new penguin products for our online shop.

Re: Radio ads

We've been advertising on Nevis radio fior about 15 months now. It gets embarrasing when people can quote our ad word for word when they meet us  We also get a reaction when we say in shops etc that we are the local picture framers "oh! you're the woman from the radio". A lot of it is about ...

Re: Newbie (Scotland)

You can have 2 free hard bed presses if you can pick them up from Fort William (if you can literally pick them up, I'll give you a tenner as well  ). They probably won't last the winter under cover outside and will otherwise go for scrap.

Re: Village Hall stall

We go to quite a few craft shows, schoot fetes, agricultural shows etc. Most craft shows are only £5-10 for a table and you somethimes don't get many people through. However, it's not about selling on the day but reaching customers who probably don't know you exist. There may be someone else selling ...

Re: Workshop heating - wood burner?

Apparently every person you have in a room is like 1 bar on an electric fire I read once.
From A level physics (34 years ago) it's 100W per person whereas a 1 bar fire is 1,000W (assuming 2,400 kcalories per day)

Re: Workshop heating - wood burner?

We have installed a couple of woodburners in the house and the dust gets everywhere. Smudges mum has enough problems getting rid of the final speck of dust on the glass without having to carry pans full of ash through the workshop.

Make sure the place is properly insulated first and then heating ...

Re: Securing Snooker Balls....

A suggestion, may work but don't blame me if it doesn't!

Drill / cut holes about 2/3 the diameter of the balls in the mountboard (possibly on top of plywood) to set them in, then have a deep frame with the glass holding the balls in place (i.e. balls touching the glass).

Re: Training course canvas stretching

Well, it's easy to dismiss DIY Framing, but I'll bet quite a few framers started with them. They teach the basics pretty well and if that;s what you want, then they are probably the most accessible. You could also try Alex at Bespoke Framing or try any framer who does canvases. I'm sure they wouldn ...

Re: Spring Fair?

We were there for 2 1/2 days. Spent the first 2 hours in the framing part and were especially taken with the colour core mount board at one of the stands (it may have been Wessex). We went back first thing on Tuesday to buy a cold mount thingy (smudges Mum is the full time framer) at a pretty good ...

Can anyone reccomend a good electric mitre saw for cutting moulding that's too big for the Morso?
