Re: Tax on business startup

When we started it was not a limited company but after a while we did become limited to protect ourselves from expensive items being damaged or stolen whilst in our charge. That may or may not have been the right idea, but it does bring with it another level of cost. Its more expensive in accountanc...

Re: Plastic bag options

We shrink wrapped ours. Keeps them dry, you dont have to unpack to show the customer plus for those that take 9 months to collect their work, it still looks as crisp as the day it was framed

Re: The NHS Covid-19 app - how does it work?

Well, being on the Isle of Wight, we have had the app (and its forerunner) for some time. Everything said above is correct. You will not notice that you have any issues within your vicinity unless you have been somewhere where someone has got Covid and its picked up on your phone. As Mark says, it n...

Re: Annual Stock Take

We used to do ours on a spreadsheet like JonathanB says. Its a pain the first year but subsequent years are much easier. I too worked on a percentage of fittings and then just applied the cost price to that percentage. It never took more than half a day to do the lot. Mountboards I just counted the ...

Re: Ricky - Barnard Castle Frames

I knew Ricky from a good few years back when he purchased a scanner off me. We chatted for some while and it was then that he mentioned the alter ego "Dixon J Scott" He was very well known on the north eastern club scene and I suspect that his country singing was the bigger part of his lif...

I would use any old paint or varnish on the back of the feet to seal it then fix with silicone sealant. Works every time and its reversible

Re: Postal Packaging.

Well considering art galleries use acrylic in front of their paintings, I don't think you will have an issue with devaluing it. AsSteve says far better than the damage done if the glass breaks. We always sent out our pics with acrylic. Even so, most couriers (and Royal Mail) wouldn't insure pictures

Re: Framing a piece of canvas?

These are always tricky and it never ceases to amaze me why artists don't think forward to displaying their work. I have done this two ways previously. First is to stretch it flat (I have put them in the hot press to get them flat) and then tape it into a mount, but my preferred way is to drymount i...

Re: Old.morso

Looking at that scale, it looks in good condition to me. It looks like you have cleaned the bed up as I can see the scales from the photo. I would snap their hand off at £250, as long as the rest is in good order as Prospero says. Ask for a demo before you take it away to see whether the corners join.

Re: Mount Cardboard

I still thing we are wrong to doubt what the customer wants. he has come into your workshop and asked that you stick the item down onto a board and I still believe that is what you should do. For reversibility use a wheat or rice based starch adhesive, but I wouldn't be going against what the custom...

Re: Separating business for VAT

It doesnt matter really. If you sell the item for £100 and keep £40 that is your income. The £60 is rebated back to the customer, who, if VAT registered pays VAT on his £60. If he is not VAT registered then he keeps the lot. Thats the one bit I may differ from Prospero on. I would only put the net i...

Re: Moulding and finish please

Yes classic Birds Eye Maple. We used to do a fair bit of that and it was a lovely moulding. We got ours from Simons and the reference was either BEM1 or BEM2 The original picture at the top of the post is of course the old stuff which is better. As an aside we used to chop down old Birds Eye Maple f...

Re: Separating business for VAT

We started off from inception of business by registering for VAT. We built our equipment up - primarily from VAT registered people or businesses so managed to get 15% (now 20%) back on those purchases. As the business grew we bought more and expensive equipment and recovered all of the VAT. When we ...

Re: Framing a paving slab??!?!

By finishing off, I meant a back and tape. I would just use a frame round the slab leaving the rear of the slab visible, so that the hanging system can be sorted. Mark's idea (NYAF) of using chemical metal could be a good idea. Its the Hilti bolt type system, but as mark says you have to be extremel...

Re: Framing a paving slab??!?!

I guess the first question would be "why do you want to frame 50 paving slabs? Once over that, I agree with you in using the tray frames, however, unless these slabs were rare then the value is minimal and hence I would glue the tray of the frame to the slab after having fixed the hangi...
