Re: Getting started with Spray Painted Finishes
I had a dabble with a spray gun a couple of years back - had a load of frames that I'd knocked together from an assortment of unwanted mouldings sourced off the interweb - unwanted mainly due to hideous colours. I thought spraying would be the shortcut to a pro finish and duly bought a small compres...

Re: Village Hall stall
I did our village primary school's Christmas fair last year with a bunch of ready mades I knocked up in sizes to fit the recent school photos - utter waste of time financially, sold a couple of tiny 'seconds' and that was it. If I were to do it again I would make some small square frames in posh/chu...
Re: Insurance
Sure - 'employees' obviously didn't come up in the original conversation but imagine my surprise when the certificate fell out of the envelope. Similarly we had quite a chat about the single item limit which is obviously too low for most new bits of framing kit. Since the guy assured me they wouldn'...

Re: My Prices Verses Imported Ready-mades
I think you get a free frame with their mounts. I've used their frames in the past (yep, cheapskate artist...) and going back just a couple of years the (I think) Ribba frame was solid wood. Not chunky, maybe the glass was thinner etc but for just over a tenner for a 40x50cm they were good value. No...
Re: Insurance
I've got an NFU homeworker policy that covers my painting/framing activities. It's fabulous value for what it is - seems to cover what the small/part time/startup home business needs (even including employer's liability) but beware some of the numbers - eg single item limits of £500 on equipment, so...

Re: Pricing
Hi Ray, Plenty of correct advice above but for what it's worth I'll share what I've done about pricing. I'm in a similar situation ie I frame my own paintings for sale speculatively, as well as on demand by customers. Initially I found a framer's pricing table helpful because I could give a 'real' f...

Re: frame stand ideas please
Probably not what you're after but I picked up an armful of folding acrylic 'display easels' (£1 a pair, different sizes) from the high street tat emporium 'The Works' the other day; ideal for what I needed at the time. It's amazing how far twenty quid goes in that place, not to mention the lb/£ in ...

Re: viewing images
Same problem here ie9 etc - clicked the 'compatibility' icon (the broken page thing next to the refresh arrow thing in the address window thing top left) and all was revealed. Not sure if there's a default setting for this somewhere.
Hope it helps.

Re: Underpinner...
If you're a regular *bay user then normal rules apply - as above it's very much buyer beware, but there's plenty of honest folk & straight kit on offer. (Seems to have been loads of Morsos over the last few weeks.) If you're new to it then tread carefully - read descriptions like a lawyer but do...

Re: Cutting MDF
How about bench end guillotines, anyone use one of those? Occurred to me it would be handy for cutting mdf/mount board etc roughly to size before finishing.

Re: Underpinners
Hi, I've been setting up my own workshop this year and decided to go Morso/Cassese for the sake of spares backup & advice - was a good decision I think, necessary spares were ex stock. Both were bought off the well known tat auction site - Morso was well abused, underpinner's fine. Had to fork o...

30mm gold leaf slip
Bought a length of gold slip the other day (on a magpie like impulse) - anyone care to share how/when they use it? It's got no rebate so presumably it sits over a mount unless you've got artwork to spare...

RMFs - scruffy backs
Spent Saturday fiddling around making up some RMF samples with strut backs - later on when admiring my handiwork, noticed the shoddy looking backs of the mouldings. One in particular is a distressed silver foil that just wraps a scruffy edge a couple of mm round the back. My questions are...when mak...

Re: Mounting heavy artwork
Re value - they're not old masters but I imagine they cost into three figures somewhere. So everyone uses paper/starch hinges? The catalogues are full of P90, PH7-70, 'archival hinging tape', self adhesive hinging tissue, gummed hayaku paper etc. Anyone know of a concise reference to when each is ap...

Re: Mounting heavy artwork
Thanks guys - framemaker read my mind despite the unorthodox vocab. Glad I was in the ballpark at least, will investigate paper and starch paste. Does it have to be Japanese?

Mounting heavy artwork
I've offered to help out a friend who has a couple of large paintings on paper that have been framed but have dropped down in the frame/mount ie the attaching sticky has failed. You can see where one of them has been taped across the whole of its width - is this right? If someone would suggest the b...

Morso blade sharpening
Just had my blades sharpened - first time since I bought my v secondhand Morso - ooh lovely. I would recommend anyone on the inexperienced end of the spectrum like I am with a non new machine and a degree of frustration in the mitring department do the same, best value few quid laid out so far. Anyh...

Thanks - it's not just me then. 'Strap clamp' must have been the words I was lost for when straining my thumbs and using some more generic incantations to help the process.
