Re: Framer's Corner replacement measuring arm 4 Morso - bewa

This has now mostly been dealt with behind the scenes, as was suggested. I'm amazed that there's been such a hostile response to my post. I wonder, if a customer bought a frame from you and rang to say a corner had come apart, would you tell them to stop moaning and just bang a couple of wedges in? ...

Framer's Corner replacement measuring arm 4 Morso - beware!

If you’re considering buying a measuring arm from Framer’s Corner as a replacement part for a Morso, please read the following so you don’t get caught out like I did. Here’s my experience. I’ve just bought a second-hand Morso from a chap via the forum who’d himself purchased a replacement measuring ...

Best way to learn framing

Hi all, does anyone have a view on the best way for a novice framer (me) to learn the trade. Go on a scheduled course like DIY Framing's? Pay to spend time in an existing gallery/framers to learn on the job? Trial and error? Other options?

thanks as always,
David

Re: when to start

Thanks again to all, it's v. difficult to know how to proceed and there's a lot of sense spoken here which I'm sure will be invaluable. At present, I'm inclined to think that I should try to offer a more specialised bespoke service, perhaps focusing on specialist finishes (I'm an art student, so thi...

when to start

Hi all, was wondering if the summer was a bad time to try to start a business. Do people find that business falls in July and August?

thanks, David

Re: Mitre trimmer not cutting straight?

Thanks for the replies. Interestingly I'm increasingly hearing from people that I'm worrying too much about the hairlines gaps in the mitres I'm trying to correct. Apparently this is par for the course and the solution is just to fill the gaps with wax or whatever. Having received this advice I actu...

Re: Mitre trimmer not cutting straight?

Thanks Mark. I did wonder about that, but the machine is only a couple of months old and hasn't done much chopping in that time, so they should be sharp. They were certainly razor sharp when I savagely cut myself on them when new!

Anyone else have any suggestions?

thanks v much

Mitre trimmer not cutting straight?

Dear all, am using a mitre trimmer/guillotine from DIY Framing and have noticed something curious. Wondered if anyone could shed any light. Basically, as the blade finishes it's pass through the wood to complete the cut, it seems to hook so that if I keep the moulding tightly in place and withdraw t...

Re: New framer desperate for advice!

Thanks so much for the advice. My plan is exactly as Robo describes - do some framing from my spare room and if it gains traction, invest in better kit, premises etc. I can see the argument for 'doing it properly' but not sure finances, etc. will permit at present.

thanks again,
David

Re: New framer desperate for advice!

I've done a lot of searching on the forum (and elsewhere) and the standard answer to anyone with problems like this seems to be 'buy a morso', 'buy a professional underpinner'. What do people think? When I was training with Mike, the axminster-style guillotine plus kimberley underpinner produced a p...

Re: New framer desperate for advice!

It's a good point. Mike Royall, who trained me, did suggest that hardwoods are trickier and so this is example is a soft wood. Very soft, I'd say, as it was splintering in the mitre guillotine and as you say the wedges have destroyed it round the back. Admittedly not all the wedges were like this. T...

New framer desperate for advice!

Hi all, I'm pretty much totally new to framing and am struggling to get the results I want when making the frame itself. I'm using a mitre trimmer/guillotine and an old Kimberley manual underpinner/mitre vice. The problem is that the mitres seem good and I can get the two pieces of moulding to fit t...
