Re: Thin relief design

Yes the traditionally finished frames look (beyond) nice. I did experiment some with traditional finishes, but I just can't seem make it look nice (yet). Plus yes, I never make large batches of frames, so heating glue/gesso, setting up spray equipment, filtering and cleaning everyting afterwards :cr...

Re: Thin relief design

Thnx! The moulding is made from a base strip of veneered mdf (244x5x1.5cm) with a couple of profile strips glued on (from hardware store) like is shown in the images here https://theframersforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=17206&hilit=josvanr The finish is very simple. I filled the seems where t...

Re: Thin relief design

Hello, aha yes those hot knives seem to be pretty nifty tools, didn't even know they existed.... Meantime I tested the method on an actual frame, see if it works in practise. I decided to add a decoration along the entire length of the frame, using repeated applications of a stencil: As the frame ha...

Re: Thin relief design

Ok thnx for the info ! Yes working with computers can be very frustrating (at least I think so). But its also possible to cut stencils with an exacto knife. I made a couple of tests that way before I got the cricut. Or if you want to try a stencil, I could send you a couple, let me know. I think I'm...

Re: Thin relief design

Thnx! No it didn't take long. I used an image from google as a basis and modified that a bit. All parts of the stencil must be connected eg if you wanted to make a stencil for the letter 'O', then the inner part would be separate circle. So you'd have to add 1 or 2 small connections from the outer t...

Re: Thin relief design

thnx. Hm yes this one can be controlled using an app and via bluetooth. It took some figuring out what the image has to look like to make the right cuts. Eg all elements have to be connected at some points, or areas will fall out of the stencil... Hm I don't know about that screen printing device. w...

Re: Thin relief design

Ooooo yes :) 8.jpg I think I found a method that meets my needs. Yesterday I purchased a 'cricut explorer air 2' off marktplaats (dutch ebay) and made an acetate stencil in the form of a celtic knot type decoration. The device can cut out pretty fine details. I first tried to tap and smear gesso on ...

Re: Thin relief design

@mark lacey I just received my 'sodium silicate' ! Hmm I must say I am a bit confused: it came in a grannular form. Tried mixing it with some acrylic medium but it doesnt seem to dissolve very well. So I ground it up a bit and heated the mixture. But all this seems to do is make the acrylic medium b...

Re: Thin relief design

I think this is developing into an obsession, sorry for that haha. Will blow over. This would be a way to do it time efficiently: https://youtu.be/ZoND8FQK_ow?t=469 stenciling already mentioned earlier, but this lady is using a different material. It looks like an acrylic gesso with glue added to it...

Re: Thin relief design

Couldn't wait anymore, so I went over to my studio and did some tests. First I tried to draw using regular acrylic gesso but that didn't work. The gesso can't be shaped into a nice domed profile if that is the correct expression. Then I searched for 'pastiglia recipes' and found a post from someone ...

Re: Thin relief design

'Pastiglia'... you mention the term and here I find the guy giving a demonstration:

I think he draws the pattern on the bare frame and then prays over a
couple of coats, giving it the 'rounded' look..

gonna try that tomorrow ! :)

Re: Thin relief design

Hmmm 'pastiglia'.. that's one good clue for further search, thnx! According to wikipedia they also used bags with a small opening in it to apply the gesso, like icing on a cake :) Will try that too (and just orderd a kg of sodium silicate..)

Re: Thin relief design

Thnx vintage frames, yes you are right I need to get some of this stuff. Will order it soon from the supplier you mention. Hm ok yes, I see, a bit like a cylinder seal from Sumeria. But then somehow find a suitable relief roller... It does look like this particular design comes from a mould (or roll...

Thin relief design

Hello!

I often see this type of designs on traditional frames:

It looks like it is kind of drawn on top. It seems to me to be too thin and fine
to be cast and glued onto the frame. Anyone know how this is done?...

thnx and best regards,

Jos

Re: Method to produce moulding profiles

Marc: do you make lengths of moulding this way and then cut, or do you use nails after having cut the miters? If you make lengths and then cut the miters, arent you afraid of cutting through the nails? Working the other way around (first cut miters, then nail), it seems difficult to me to get the me...

Re: Method to produce moulding profiles

Thnx!! Peter: I tried using pva glue and clamping, but that turned out to be very difficult: the strips move too much when you dont clamp them, and when you clamp them, you can't clean off the excess glue under the clamp. (As some strips are so narrow, it is difficult to glue without squeeze-out.) O...

Re: Method to produce moulding profiles

Thnx ! The outer and inner profiles are simple stock profiles from the hardware store. Cost only a few euros for 3 meters.
