Re: Getting rid of mould from paintings

Over here, we have paper conservators and canvas conservators. From what I gather, the skills and techniques are significantly different. Each is such a specialty that I haven’t seen anyone who claims to be able to restore both paper and canvas. I’ve taken a crack at moldy paper on occasion, but I w...

Re: Dismantling old frames

This will be a bit difficult to explain … We’ve had pretty good luck by closing one of the clamps on our right angle vise all way. Place the inside of the rebate against the back of this front clamp. Secure the other side of the frame to the vise in the usual manner. Slowly, but firmly, begin to ope...

Re: How do I use these properly?

I can’t remember exactly since I’ve had them for over twenty years. More than likely I bought them from United MFRs , a distributor out of New York. The stamping on the pliers is pretty worn, but from what I can read they are called “Knipex” made in Germany. IMO the virtue of these is that they are ...

Re: Clear surface sealer for block mounting jigsaws

I’ve seen a clear aerosol spray specifically designed for jig saw puzzles. It can be found in a good sized craft supply store. I don’t believe that this spray has particularly good adhesive properties; it is used mainly to seal the paper surface from moisture and mildew. A lot of our customers use i...

Re: How do I use these properly?

You will only need to use the “cut runners” if you are trying to shave a fraction of an inch from the side of glass when the waste is too narrow to grab with your hands. Place the “anvil” (the bump) on the scored side of the glass and gently squeeze. The break will start at this site and, with luck,...

Re: Hanging Nielsen frames

I’m a little late to this party, but from your second image, the moulding doesn’t look like any Nielsen product that I’m aware of. It looks sort of like an inexpensive knock off of poster/photo frame that has the corners riveted. It also looks like the hanging hardware has been riveted to the Masoni...

Re: Fixing foxing

The automatic knee jerk response is, “Hie thee to a conservator!”, but that’s not what I do very frequently. For those spotty blemishes, we use a 10% (by volume) mixture of household chlorine bleach and 90% water. Using a cotton pad (the kind you get in cosmetics section of pharmacy) lightly blot th...

Re: intellectual property

If your laws are anything like ours, technically by taking photos of the event, the photographer is violating the condition of the contract that he/she entered into when he/she purchased the ticket and entered the stadium. It is a civil (tort) violation but not a criminal one. But, practically speak...

Re: UV damage on art

Window films we get here don't degrade Bill, and they block 99% UV light the same as when new, many years after fitting.
Can you cite a reference, please? I have spent hours trying to find some confirmation.

Re: making bricks from morso droppings

We use Morsø shavings as kindling during the winter, although not in a “brick”. Because the mouldings are kiln dried, they burn hot and fast and will catch our fireplace logs in minutes. The fumes from the shavings give me a blinding headache, but flames are reeeeal p u r d y . Seriously, be careful...

Re: UV damage on art

I am not trying to create a controversy here. I simply don't know. The point is that I don’t know whether the UV protection is glass degrades over time even if it uses “blockers” rather than absorbers. I cannot find any information (other than anecdotal) from TruVue. I liken their lack of response t...

Re: UV damage on art

A few weeks ago, there was a discussion on The Grumble concerning the longevity of the UV protection on glass such as Conservation Clear and Museum. I apologise for its length, so if you have trouble sleeping at night, take this to bed with you. My original post on TG: -------------- My belief mainl...

Several years ago I was visiting a friend in Florida whom I hadn’t seen in a few years. He and I were walking on the beach and passed this old guy (maybe late 70’s, early 80’s) coming in the opposite direction. His hair was completely white – head, legs, chest and back. All he was wearing was a stra...

Re: A pressing matter ...

In most cases you shouldn’t have to iron cross stitch. Even using the “Newbury” method, once you get the fabric centered, pull the fabric in each of the four dimensions by one row of the cross stitch. This will make it a little flatter. The normal tension that you apply to the piece to get it square...

Re: My first 'big' order but how much do I order ?

Apologies … A disclaimer: I screwed up on the arithmetic in my previous post. Sorry! I meant to say that each frame would require 2.24 meters and not 1.24. OOPS! Please forgive me … I’m an American, you know. But, the general concept of needing to know distributors lengths for an accurate assessment...

Re: My first 'big' order but how much do I order ?

Good for you, Adam! Keep plugging away and someday, with luck, some large hotel may come to you with an order for a hundred. The problem with “guesstimating” how much moulding you will need is not knowing how long each length in the shipment will be. Will they ship in 3 meter lengths or 2 or somethi...
