Re: Price check time again?

Just for giggles, our bottom of the line (simple black, document frame) would be $100.90 (£60.00) while out median price moulding ($13.80) would run $156.90 (£93.30). We don’t have a sales tax (VAT), nor are we in a particularly high rent district. Our prices compared to most U. S. Grumblers are sli...

Re: Horizontal or Vertical ? Mountboard Storage

I would be hesitant to store mat board horizontally. It might help keep them flatter, but for the storage units to be efficient, you’d probably have to store multiple sheets of more than one style or color in a shelf. And, you just know that the one sheet you’d need would be the bottom one of a twen...

Re: Am I one of those?

Clearly, with my geographic location I’ve never dealt with Simons. Where I am located there are several manufacturers and distributors with whom I can deal. In the last several months I have seen, perhaps, a dozen or so sales representatives from various companies. All of them (like we retailers) ar...

Mr. Patch was mentioned over here, too. They aired an interview he did several years ago on one of the major news programs.

It is amazing and gratifying what our ancestors went through and did for us.

Re: Morso adjustment

Oh, yeah! I tend to take pretty good care of our tools and machinery. The Morsø is fairly easy for us to keep clean since it sits in the middle of the workroom and isn't against a wall. Actually, when we were getting the store ready to shoot our TV commercials, my wife and I spent a three day weeken...

Re: How should I do this?

I think you will have to tiptoe around on eggshells with this. If his workmanship is terrible (e.g. if his mounts have wicked over cuts or you can slip a credit card through his joined corners), you might be able to convince him to let you do the cutting and joining. If his designs are terrible, unl...

Re: Morso adjustment

If I understand your question correctly, there is an adjustment that you can make where the yoke meets the vertical connecting rod. You need to bring the rod down so that the blades can travel lower. This happens when the blades have been sharpened to the point where too much metal has been honed fr...

Re: 8 sided frame

I’ve only done it twice, and it was a real bother. If you’re using a Morsø, each miter angle needs to be 67-1/2°(45 + 22.5) rather than 45°, but is difficult to set precisely enough with a Morsø. And, your rebate support won’t work at those angles. If you use a saw, your “protractor” scale may have ...

Re: Advice please!

If it needs a fixative, let the artist do it ! There are too many hazards that can jump up and bite you in the butt – dribbling and inconsistent spraying, color changes, and disturbing the surface of the art with the aerosol. If you are concerned about shedding, and no one will fix it, either build ...

Re: Aluminium Frames - much call for ?

Out of curiosity, I tried to find the Nielsen “forbidden fruit” profile for a more accurate price comparison, but came up empty. I’m guessing from your image that it is Profile #90, but even on my specifiers, I cannot find that color, so it may not be available in the U. S. I don’t have anything exa...

Re: To 'Sandwich' or not to 'Sandwich' ?

We tape a sandwich very rarely. Some others, like Peter, do it out of necessity to keep out pesky bugs. We don’t seem to have as many of those bothersome critters 'round here. I find it difficult to tape the edges of the sandwich without it showing at the sight line. If I lay down too much tape and ...

Re: Aluminium Frames - much call for ?

Yes, using the same sliding scale/ ”exponential” decay mark up for both wood and metal mouldings, our median retail for wood is $13.80/ ft while Nielsen #15 is $9.60 / ft. If we included some of the odd profiles which we don’t sell much of, the median would be $11.10 for all metals. We import most o...

Re: Print lifting off self adhisive board

If you’re trying to release an air bubble and if the substrate is foam board, you could drive a pin through the foam board under the bubble instead of the artwork itself. I haven’t done it, but others have with some success. However, if the adhesive is pressure sensitive like PMA (rather than a heat...

Re: Is this scam ?

I’ve had a few requests like yours. It isn’t a scam in the Nigerian-orphan/dead-Uncle sense, but an effort to solicit you to buy a web site common to Asian markets. Unless you are doing or planning to do business in the Far East, I won’t be too worried. There are so many variations on dot-com (like ...

Re: Aluminium Frames - much call for ?

I realize that the demographics are very different, but roughly 10 – 15% of our sales come from Nielsen frames. Not only can we offer most aluminum frames at considerably less expense than traditional wood frames, but, because most have thin, clean, contemporary profiles, they seem to be ideal for p...

Re: Account keeping question for the Guru's of framing

I’m certainly not an expert, but I rather enjoy the bookkeeping aspect of this business. Many people think I’m a little weird for that. The simplest form of bookkeeping is the single entry system. In it you manually enter your income on one side of a ledger and your expenses on another. Most good si...

Big deal! I get midges, corn flies, “no see’ums” all the time. I tend to ignore them. They’re gonna die anyway in there, so once they do, just tap the frame ‘til they scoot under the mount. http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/rr300/maltwit/Frame.jpg I did have to unfit the frame for this bugger, thou...

Re: Not a lot of people know that.

When I was in elementary school (maybe the fourth grade) our teacher tried to demonstrate how unhealthy carbonated beverages were to the well being of our little selves. She placed one earthworm in a jar of Coke; another in a glass of water. The following morning she pointed out that the earthworm i...
