Re: How did your CMC change your life ?

A CMC made me more popular and a lot better looking.

… well, it would have … if only I had one … which I don't.

Re: choosing the right wood for Stretcher Bars

My concern with using hardwood for stretchers would be the difficulty in mounting the canvas. If one uses a simple mechanical stapler, you might not be able to drive the staples deeply enough to make them flush; if you use an electric or pneumatic stapler, you may knock the corners out of square. … ...

Re: Curly Plans

We recently had two old photos which had been rolled up and stored in an attic for nearly 70 years. Trying to unroll it was like nailing Jell-O to a wall. Even with weights the curl kept pulling them up like a berserk window shade. Because of its age, I was afraid that the emulsion would crack if I ...

Re: Dilemma with Pricing!

Do I therefore try to factor in the cost of delivery into my pricing? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Yes, delivery charges are part of your “fixed overhead” (okay, not really, but they should be factored in). An alternative is to have your moulding chopped. It is, of course, more expe...

Re: CRESCENT mountboard anyone ?

Crescent is our primary mat (mount) board. Their quality control is excellent and it cuts cleanly and evenly. It is, however, ever-so-slightly thinner and ever-so-slightly more flexible than Bainbridge, but the difference is almost unnoticeable. A few weeks ago, the Crescent workers went on strike, ...

Re: Fillets... what do you use to cut?

I am a big fan of FilletMaster. Once you get it calibrated, it will give you dead bang accurate fillets each and every time. No more back and forth to the Morsø, trim and dry fit, repeat ad. infinitum . It’s not cheap, but if you do just a few, the time savings and the lack of wasted, undercut fille...

Re: Fillet Master

I can’t help you out as far as a U. K. distributor is concerned, but you might try contacting FilletMaster directly. They may be able to find someone locally for you. You could always order directly from them (I think), but I’m not sure if shipping costs would kill you or not. BTW: I am a huge fan o...

Re: Chinese Paper Cutting

We’ve done quite a few of these. One of the problems is that people often use very cheap paper and often color them with Sharpies or Magic Markers. Even with the best conservation framing, they will often fade in a few years. Although encapsulation is probably preferred, we most frequently simply “s...

Re: the tax mans reply

There was a story a few years ago about some disgruntled tax payer who, in an effort to needle the IRS, fill out his form in roman numerals. He was due a refund. Some IRS employee got even with him by filling out the refund check also in roman numerals. The problem came when that the taxpayer had to...

Re: Memoory Card readers

I have a SanDisk 12-in-1 card reader. It will actually read 13 or 14 different varieties of memory cards e.g. Micro SD (with an adapter supplied with Micro cards). The only thing you have to be careful with are the Compact Flash I & II cards which have the teeny-tiny pin receptacles. The pins in...

Re: rechargeable vacuum

I have a Black & Decker Dustbuster, and, like yours, it doesn’t hold a charge more than a few minutes. It is the third battery operated vacuum I’ve had in about fifteen years. I only use it to clear our work table tops when there is grit or shards of glass, so the charge doesn’t have to hold too...

Re: How did we ever manage without such info?

I got my wife a cleaning service for a birthday gift a few years ago. They use a furniture polish called Murphy’s Oil Soap . It is supposed to bring back the shine on wood surfaces. I guess it does, but you'd think that the name should give a tiny hint to the cleaners. Once they are finished with th...

Re: Yellow Pages - No more free listings

I have mixed feelings about the Yellow Pages. It may be true that many people (especially the younger crowd) use their iPhones and laptops to do searches for a particular business or service, or to look up phone numbers, Yellow Page directories are still in every home and office. If I’m at home and ...

Just be careful. When you get a chance, scan the back up files before you have to re-install them. You don't want to reinfect your hard drive if there are some hidden nasties in your archives.

I don’t mind giving quotes over the phone. I have a series of print outs that gives a rough idea using our median priced moulding. We keep copies near each of our phones. The sheets include one for photos/prints with a 2-1/2 inch mat, standard glass, backing, mounting, fitting, etc.; another sheet f...
