Re: Removing double-sided tape
I did not get on well with zest. Lighter fluid I've used many times, for masking tape, sellotape, self adhesive stickers on the back of photos, stuck down pictures, etc. for items which are not of high value. Obviously it's not the job of a framer to interfere with the artwork so I first suggest to ...

Re: Help with 'pinning'
Are they individual pieces lying on a piece of glass? - Is it free machine embroidery on dissolved fabric? If they are made of thread, then you could stitch as unobtrusively as possible, to a fabric backing, using a similar thread, then stretch the fabric backing over a piece of conservation mountbo...

Re: Window-mount width?
At some point in my training, 20 years and I'm still learning, I realised that same width moulding and mount border can create a stripey effect. I usually work to the rule of thirds. There's an explanation of the golden ratio by Mark Wilson in Annabelle Ruston's book 'Frame Design'. For example the t...

Re: Smoothing edges of glass
I only ever smooth glass edges if it's a really rough break, which sometimes happens when taking off a couple of mms. I nearly always wear gloves, leather finger tips and palms (gardening) gloves - used only for handling glass - mainly because it cuts down on finger marks, they give a great grip too...

One option would be to stitch on an extra width of edging fabric which could then be stapled or laced or something...

Re: Reaching Out
I am a bespoke, or custom framer. small turnover of jobs but they are nearly all hand finished, because I don't like wasting finished mouldings and I can fix/disguise/incorporate damage to wood mouldings. First I ask the customer if they want something specific, if not we usually start by choosing a...

Re: Dried blood on museum board
Marks on rag board can be sanded off with a very fine grade sandpaper, then burnish down the fluffed up area with an agate burnisher, Practice on a scrap first to perfect the amount of pressure with the sandpaper and burnisher and to make sure the sandpaper doesn't leave a mark,, It's also possible ...

Re: Fixing artwork into floater frames
I like to use the bendy thin brass plates, which come in several sizes, from Lion, you can bend them in just the right place to fit your stretcher and frame, because no two that I've done have been the same size.

Re: Help needed to frame wedding shoes
I was asked to frame an historical shoe sole, (there's further info in a post on here 'shoe sole needs fixing discretely' last December) and J Feig very helpfully advised to use clear polyester as an archival product. The strips are visible close up, but the customer didn't mind and my feeling is th...

Shoe sole needs mounting discretely
IMG_20161207_102432168.jpg I've got this old shoe sole to frame for a customer, in a box frame, maybe dates from 1605, rigid, has a few small existing holes, I thought I'd go for brown thread to hold it in place using the existing holes, in the picture I've put some transparent thread and polyester...
