Re: Morso Chopper Issues

I use a lot of non-solvented cartridge glue - mainly for joining stacked plain wood sections. But it's great as a filler and can be painted with water-based paint when dry. Faced with that light grey moulding I would gently sand the chippy bits and then rub over with the said glue to fill the gap. W...

Re: Soft wood splitting on Morso F

Try slipping a sacrificial strip of MDF between the fences and the moulding. This will prevent break-out in some cases.

* It might throw the measuring scale off-kilter so compensate if necessary.

Re: Filling of Corner Join

It's best not to agonise too much about getting the exact shade. I've sometimes done the job by rubbing the corner
with a mucky finger.

If you have gaps big enough to need finish-matching then turn you efforts to your cutting/joining equipment setup.

Re: Fabric work top cover

I have two benches. A mucky bench and a clean bench. The mucky one has the sheet of MDF on which gets replaced when it gets too mucky. I use this bench for making and hand-finishing frames. I have roll of 'conservatory' carpet (£3 of LDL) which I put over when I want something a bit softer. My other...

Re: Do you mount to board or barrier?

A proper 'bookmount' consists of an undermount with a window mount hinged to it. There are many variations according to
the nature of the mounted item.

Re: Chop saw thoughts

This is my setup - or lash up. :P  shed13_007.jpg It actually works a treat on plain wood mouldings although any slight gaps get made good in the finishing process. Having two saws means you don't disturb the angles by swinging the head and it saves time. You can also fine-tune the angles like ...

Re: Do you mount to board or barrier?

The 'book' mount is the preferred method of mounting paper items. In large public galleries only a small percentage of the collection is on display at any given time. The rest is stored away unframed. In order to facilitate handling the art is mounted in a way that it can be handled without actually...

Re: Underpinner v nails

That's a Euro 'Butterfly' model. I stated off with the basic (8001?) model which I used for 30+ years. They do have their quirks
though.... The pressure pad is a bit inadequate and can dent soft wood. I made a cork-faced triangle of ply to place between
the corner and pad. :D

Re: Bright red flat moulding 50mm or wider

You can often spray a generic flat moulding that has the usual 'plasticy' finish with a rattle can of car spray paint. I used to spray the good old ½" black cushion with paint cans from Halfords and it stuck a treat and was very durable. The paint formulations may have changed over the years bu...

Re: How is this moulding effect achieved?

There are many ways according to how extreme the 'grooving' you want. A wire brush on a power drill along the grain gives a good rough effect. Pine works better than obeche as it has soft parts between the 'rays' which wear quicker. For deeper grooves, and sanding drum on a Dremel used at 45º works ...

Try Brummer Stopping. :D I find it blends into the natural wood very well.
Antique Pine matches most pale woods.

Re: Ornate gold moulding for canvas minatures

This is why I do 99% hand finished mouldings nowadays. :D I can make anything given time and budget. On the face of it you just need to make a basic tray frame and put an ornate moulding around it, but finding a suitable 'off the shelf' ornate moulding is not easy. Could you give a more detailed des...

Re: Sealing packages

I've used a white acid free self adhesive like Nitto tape/P70 for a few years on most work, saving the acid free gummed tape for level 1 work but recently started to use the gummed tape for everything. Masking tape is banned in my work space, I can't stand the stuff. If you've ever had to open up a...

Re: Sealing packages

I've been doing this for years. It doesn't take long and once done you know no bits can get in. It's much easier the handle one unified object than faff about loading separate glass/mount/back into a frame. It's when you try to do this that bits get sucked in. Also when in the frame it's an excellen...

Re: Question about Keen cut Excalibur 5000 board cutter

The legs can be extended yes and you could alway seat the legs in wooden blocks for extra height. But raising the machine would make reaching the upper two-wheel cutter block very difficult unless you are very tall or have very long arms. Mine sits nicely against an 8½' wall. Raising the horizontal ...

Re: Hedgehog method

It should be mentioned that the float method of mounting is not really the ideal way to mount paper-borne artwork. Especially large stuff. It may stay reasonably flat or it may go wavy an curl away from the mounting board at the edges. That's something that can't really be 'cured'. The traditional w...
