Re: Thin relief design

Hi Jos,

This image shows pastiglia, it's just thick gesso loaded on a brush, which is then painted on to a pencil drawn design on the flat gesso surface.

Re: Built up frames

I've seen so many different ways of making these and variations on this simplest of cassetta mouldings.

This is one I make a lot. It uses three Rose and Hollis mouldings, A113 for the inner, F7 for the flat, and A255 for the outer. The overall width is 95mm

Re: Need your views and opinions

I like the idea, anything that gets 'picture framing' into the mind of a potential customer is a good thing if you ask me. A visual frame image or design around the text could be a good idea, reinforce what the message is about a couple that just came to mind while reading through the suggestions so...

Re: Large Aperture Mounts

Wessex do a few Crescent museum boards at big enough size: https://www.wessexpictures.com/Crescent_Jumbo_Rag.html Only available in a couple of colours though. I've cut mounts around this size with a Keencut straight edge (72") and hand cutter, don't know of any mountcutter that is big enough, ...

Re: where can i buy this moulding

It's the 'Stonehenge' frame from 'Frame your TV' website.

Probably all stuff is exclusive to them.

Re: A silly question ? Do oil paintings fade ?

With older paints and pigments, it seems there are changes occurring over time:

and are quite a few papers online from museums and conservators looking at the fading of some pigments in oil paint.

Re: Moulding search

I've never had any from them, was originally told about them by a frame restorer in London... maybe they are only interested in high quantities, seems they concentrate more on the architectural plaster work than composition...

Re: Moulding search

You can get many designs in compo from George Jackson in London as well...

Jules007 do you have an image of the frame style you want to make? Might know where you can get something similar...

Re: Moulding search

A good selection of compo ornaments can be bought from a USA supplier called Bomar Designs, pretty expensive way to do it though. There are various UK makers who would be able to make a gesso frame and apply ornament for you to then finish. But a lot depends on what ornament you want, and the moulds...

Re: Moulding search

As Prospero points out, the gadroon style ornament usually radiates out from a central point, so on a single side it goes left and right... this is the same for quite a few patterns, for example a bunched leaf frame is basically a running pattern (see pic) but the main ornament goes out from a centr...

Re: Fire proof framing

I don't think any normal float glass would be suitable, needs to be fire rated safety glazing. A glazing company like Schott probably do a fire rated glass... Is it a highly valuable piece of art being framed, or something disposable? keep it simple... https://www.luminati.co.uk/fire-rated-poster-fr...

Re: Workshop Tools

I think it also depends on quantity of moulding you plan to make and what type profiles, also how much room you have. If I was setting this up (and I did have plans to do so a few years ago, before my business went in another direction) I would get a good solid spindle moulder with power feed, table...

100+ Full Lengths of Moulding to Clear

I'm having a clear out and as I rarely use pre-finished mouldings these days, I've got around 120 lengths of various pre-finished mouldings looking for a new home. Big selection of different styles and finishes; gold, silver, black, white, stained, veneer, and many others, including quite a few of t...

Re: Starting out recommendations?

My starting out recommendations would be to get a few good books, I like the Pete Bingham book because it was the first I started learning from, not sure if an updated or revised edition has been released... as it was about 25 years ago when I started. There are a few good books by Vivian Kistler on...

Re: Resizing a Frame

Lovely job. How is it going to be rejoined? I glued/screwed on a backing frame, triangular shape to support the frame profile, so I could cut the frame to size, I will just glue, screw, and nail the corners, use the Ulmia spring clamps, and some backing corner blocks.... whatever it takes basically...

Resizing a Frame

Just started this frame cut down, I've done hundreds of these before, but is always bit nerve racking and also a little sad to change an antique frame size or modify it, but it's something that is done a lot in museums and private collections. I've got another one I'm doing which has already been re...

Re: Background colours for moulding chevron display boards

I did something similar to Prospero, screwed a load of strips of 18mm MDF to the wall which were painted the same colour as the wall and stuck velcro to the MDF, this was glued and stapled in place. Personally I like a light neutral wall colour for displaying samples... basically boring off white, w...
