Cold frames
I hope everyone is keeping warm & busy; which leads me to..... Does a workshop need to be constantly heated, in order to prevent boards and other perishables from warping or suffering? And is it only mounts that'd suffer if the space isn't kept at a decent temperature, or will glass get condensa...

Re: Ever found anything good?
Great story about the abstract - very honest of you, in more ways than one! BTW, I received my copy of the book you mentioned and I'm absolutely delighted with it. Like you say, just the right mix of info and advice without being daunting. Also really like the way it covers hobbyists on a budget AND...

Ever found anything good?
Just watched a Youtube video of a bloke re-framing an old mirror. After he carefully extracted the old glass, he was a tiny bit disappointed at not finding anything behind it......he said he sometimes comes across old newspaper clippings and suchlike. Anyone ever found anything interesting when re-f...

Re: Advice on 'going pro'
hahahaaaha... When I first moved to present gaff I had a wobbly fence. I wasn't posts+panels but posts with slats nailed on so replacing individual posts would have been a major PITA. What I did was plant another post as near as possible and joined it to the wobbly specimen with steel plates. After...

Re: Advice on 'going pro'
 As it happens, I've had more than a passing acquaintance with fence posts. Concreting wooden posts in is a tad dodgy as they are apt to rot at the point they go into the concrete. It helps a bit if you build the concrete up so water can't pool around the base. And even if they are pressure tr...

Re: Advice on 'going pro'
Not a great deal has changed in the last 20 years as regards framing practices. Apart from moulding quality getting worse. :? More folks are using computerised mount cutters maybe. LOL. Thanks, P. Didn't mean to doubt your recommendation in the slightest...I just ordered a copy, so many thanks. Rea...

Re: Advice on 'going pro'
Smithy said:- Do you think it matters that it's 20-odd years old (just thinking gear etc. might have changed)? I have been framing for nearly 20 yrs and the basic pricipals are still the same..... cut 4 bits of wood , stick together, cut glass and backing...................... Framing isn't rocket ...

Re: Advice on 'going pro'
Smithy.... You could do worse than pick up one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Picture-Framing-Pete-Bingham/dp/1853911798 To my mind, it hits the spot. Covers just about everything. Not too simplistic and not too technical. Something to read before you go on your course. :P Many thanks, Prospero....

Re: Advice on 'going pro'
As you are based in Surrey it might be worth looking at the courses run by Wessex at Leatherhead. My hubby took a course back in the 1990s with Origin Framing in Croydon which has since been bought by Wessex. The week course was excellent and went through all the basics. At the time he worked for h...

Re: Advice on 'going pro'
Thanks very much for the replies (and warm welcomes) so far. But in my attempt to 'not waffle on too much', I think I have not been clear enough - apologies for that. Here goes with some more detail: Right now, I am a freelance writer (in advertising), who wants to learn a profession that'll sustain...

Re: Well blow me
I read somewhere that the wheelbase on modern Minis is the same as the smaller Landrovers! They are big old lumps, when seen side-by-side with the original Mini.

Advice on 'going pro'
Happy New Year all (if that's not too late). I've just found this forum and have enjoyed what I've read, so thought I come aboard! This is my first post, and I hope I'm not going in too much 'at the deep end' with what I'm asking. Basically, I'm looking to switch careers, and would be extremely grat...
