OK, thanks, I didn't know that. I have a couple of friends that teach there so might be worth a look.

Re: Foxing

First spend two years doing this: http://www.arts.ac.uk/camberwell/courses/postgraduate/ma-conservation/ Then after a few more years' experimenting, you will know as much as this guy. http://periodfinebindings.typepad.com/removing_foxing_and_milde/ (And ignore people who tell you that you can use M...

Re: Conservation Ideas

Prints such as this tend to be worth not a lot of money. They are interesting and attractive to the right customer, but as far as value goes any restoration is likely to greatly exceed what you can sell them for. Paper restoration is a very tricky job and few people have the expertise, so they know...

Re: Conservation Ideas

If you're going to mount it, and the water stain is beyond the plate mark and signature, then use the mount to hide the stain and save yourself £150 spent at a conservator. There's another Terry print by Batley that sold recently at auction for £120. A water stain can always be removed subsequently...

Foxing

Guten morgen, I've been looking at conservation methods for books as I have a 1918 Heinemann 1st edition of Swinburne's poetry for children illustrated by Rackham, "The Springtide of Life", which has a little foxing on end papers and I was wondering if anyone had any DIY  experience...

Re: Conservation Ideas

It's your call really but probably best to cover yourself and get it as clean as possible - depending on how much that would cost against it's value. I'd have to google London paper conservators but a recommendation would be better, maybe one of the museums would recommend one. Otherwise Google the...

Re: Conservation Ideas

Thanks for the reply. I thought I would mat it but was wondering if it was ok to just leave the water damage hidden and whether it would cause future problems. Damage does look old but that's a guess. I'm happy to leave it as long as it's not going to speed degradation. Any ideas where to go for de-...

Conservation Ideas

Hi, I have a print from 1885 that has some water damage that I need to remount but debating what is the best way forward without having to cut out the damaged area (not on the etching but right bottom corner of unetched surround - I can post an image if needed). Guessing either someone tried to clea...

Re: Wanted-Keencut Ultimat Gold/Valiani Astra

Still looking for a 2nd hand mount cutter. Prefer 40/48. Not too bothered about cosmetics, It just needs to make a perfect cut. Would appreciate if you could tell me the price you would ideally like for the item rather than the ambiguous "make me an offer" which could lead to offence. I'm...

Re: Camera wanted for photographing paintings

For serious copy work I would buy an old 4x5 view camera with pans and tilts (to correct parallax) and attach a DSLR to the back. The best of both worlds. There are commercial adapter backs, or DIY. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZ_Wt_YKHSw http://www.ebay.com/itm/4x5-Large-Format-Camera-to-Canon...

Re: Camera wanted for photographing paintings

Most of the stuff I photograph is for cataloging but I have done repro work for printing. I use a d7000 with a 50mm 1.8 lense in natural light. I profile each shot with a colour card. The other thing I find vital is a black back drop behind the camera and also cover the camera and tripod. You can e...

Re: Camera wanted for photographing paintings

I have had to do a few large pictures. Simplest way is to treat as a panorama, take multiple shots with overlap and stitch in CC. I use a D200 but have a very good Nikkon 105mm lens with very little edge distortion. Full frame is not really necessary but good glass is vital + tripod. If you have a ...

True... Most on there are Pro togs so generally have looked after them well as it's their business. If you want to buy new, another place then is DigitalRev online. Although based in Hong Kong their prices include import duties so my be worth a look. I got my Sony A9, for exactly the same reason as...

Re: Camera wanted for photographing paintings

Why don't you buy a decent scanner Hi Chris, I do have a scanner but also need a new one- funnily enough the kit list never seems to end. A lot of the paintings are very big, quite a few around 180x120. I spent a long time converting some of my thousands of negs into DNG's but would like to do them...

Re: Camera wanted for photographing paintings

For what it's worth, I am a full time photographer and buy tones of equipment every year. I would recommend giving these a look, they have the best prices by a mile, and the service is exelaint. Several of my professional buddy's use them, every one of them rates them highly. http://www.hdewcameras...

Re: Camera wanted for photographing paintings

Check out Facebook groups... https://www.facebook.com/groups/second.hand.photo.gear/ theres a few on there. Thanks Chris. I'm a little hesitant about 2nd hand as shutter actuations on pro cameras are generally unacceptably high but I'll take a look. The days of an honest "one careful lady owne...
