Re: Starting out recommendations?

Forgot to say, for training I did the beginners 1 day course and the shadowbox day course with Jan at Framers Equipment in Northampton. Small groups, good value. Jan is on the forum as Mitre an. An added bonus, he has been incredibly helpful when I get stuck on projects. I did do a day basic trainin...

Re: Starting out recommendations?

The Fine Art trade guild conservation framing book is my go to book at the moment. I use YouTube for techniques, but it's very hit n miss, loads of bad techniques out there too. Harlequin framing is always correct though, as he is current FATG top dog/leader/chief. Technical machine advice, I've fou...

Re: hand painted white frames, spray or not to spray

I'm in the same boat. My current process is 1-2 coats of acrylic gesso as primer then light sand 3-4 coats of farrow n ball, with extender if its not spreading smoothly. I've started adding the dead flat varnish into the last coat to save the last coat. Using a good quality "one stroke" bru...

My supplier in Wales and a South West rep have both said that the last few months have been generally quiet.

Re: Moving the group to a social media site?

Rainbow,
Fair enough, yes, horses for courses!
Yes, free advice, I've learnt a huge amount of technical skills from Framers Only in just a few months, from people's willingness to share freely.
Just putting it out there, I'm happy to be told I'm wrong.

Moving the group to a social media site?

Hi John, More and more often I think that the framers forum might benefit from a move over to a social media site like Facebook. I am not a fan of Facebook in general, but having recently joined and contributed to a number of closed framers groups on Facebook, I have witnessed the benefits. General ...

Re: Blue foam edge protectors anyone ?

If there is any moisture in the floor I would always put down a DPM first, before underlay and flooring

Re: Blue foam edge protectors anyone ?

Mark For packing frames the cheapest white underlay is good, 30m +rolls are the best value. If you're looking for a damp proof underlay for laminate/wood flooring I would go for the gold backed underlay, a bit more expensive but if you tape the joins as you lay it, it's a moisture barrier, insulator...

Re: Blue foam edge protectors anyone ?

I try and use suppliers like Lions etc but due to the order minimums I often resort to ebay for it. N.B. There are various sizes, depth/width, work checking, I stock 2 sizes. On a tangent, I've also been using rolls of foam flooring underlay instead of bubblewrap, when needed. I'm very happy with th...

Re: Underpinning ash

I agree about the Hoffmann, as I said earlier. I only have a Morso and advice from many framers in the States, is that for Hardwoods the Morso will always give a superior cut to a saw. They are even encouraging framers who've only used a saw, to invest in a Morso, specifically for Hardwoods, so your...

Re: Underpinning ash

Yeah, I've only underpinned the next morning once, so I guess I was lucky, although that glue is very strong.
If you can figure out how to underpin with the clamp on, I guess that is the best way!

Re: Underpinning ash

I managed to get a second hand Hoffmann mu2 from Hoffmann's at a very good price, it was a game changer! The only way I could underpin oak and ash reliably with my foot operated underpinner was: -softwood wedges - as close to inside and in middleish - helped a lot to pin the middle one first then in...

Re: Advice on drymounting please

Hi Graham, I've just been loaned "The Mounting and Laminating Handbook 2nd edition" by Chris A. Paschke, which I was told was the go to book. I have just done the course with Steve Goodall at Hotpress/Drytac in Bristol. It was a very worthwhile day, a bit premature for me as I don't yet ha...
