Faint pencil marks
I often find faint pencil marks, by they names, auction numbers etc on the rear of picture frames. Is there a particular spectrum of light or a scientific method that will illuminate them and make them easier to read?
Thank you.
Thank you.

Re: Frame origin
You have educated me Sir. I had no idea how to identify gold leaf overlap. The painting certainly went through the prestigious Witcomb Gallery in Beunos Aires - so, as you say, someone must have thought highly of it to send it all that way or for a rich Argentinian to buy it on his European tour and...

Re: Strainer construction.
I suspect the painting may originally be 1890's Newlyn School so it would make sense you seeing them in your part of the world.
I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

Frame origin
Do any of you clever people have any suggestions as to who may have made the attached frame? Where? What date?
Can you suggest a resource where I can trawl through 19th Century catalogue designs trying to find a match?
Thanks for all suggestions - even the one telling me where to go!

Am I correct in saying that this style was unusual and if so was it particular to a place/country or time period? I suspect the painting is late 19th centur...

Re: Dutch ripple moulding.... HELP !!
Hello Richard, I wonder if you could help me please? I have tried Jakob Schiffer who essentially constantly failed to reply. I have also tried a company in Canada, same problem, and an expensive company in London. I have an Eastern European portrait miniature dated around 1650-1720 and have had a sp...
