D&J Simmons don't recognise it, and neither do Rose and Hollis stock anything that wide.

Frame identification
Hi all, Hope everyone is well. I have been tasked with making a frame in the same style as the attached photos. I'm wondering whether this is an off the shelf moulding as the finish looks quite uniform, or whether it has been done by hand. Any thoughts on the moulding and/or finish most appreicated!...

Re: Dutch ripple moulding.... HELP !!
Fantastic work! I should think there would be a fair bit of demand for frames as beautiful as that. Pear is a lovely timber to work too.

Re: Ribbed frame
Thanks for all your generous replies. Yes, I think lots of gesso is the way to go. I have a couple of tools which I could try. Using the CNC would do a great job, but in reality it would be too good a job and have no character as mentioned. The spatula looks like it could be worthwhile. All options ...

Ribbed frame
Hi all, I may have to make a copy of this frame and I was curious to see how people think it could be best done. It has been gessoed and has some bole showing through. Given the specific profile of the moulding, off the shelf doesn't seem to be an option, from my research. If it was an order for mul...
Re: Marketing
AdWords is a funny one. I have used it (for furniture rather than framing) and have found a strange correlation of never getting work directly from it but rather having people find me online shortly after having used it. (I have only used it a few times in small bursts.) Perhaps there is some algori...

Re: Frame thoughts
Thanks for the explanation, that helps a lot. I am going to get to Tate Britain before Christmas to have a good gander at the frames and see them in a new light.

Frame thoughts
So I came into possession of a couple of these frames recently as an auspicious beneficiary to a clear out. They're rather nice and I think they're real gold leaf. Although the black band appears to have been painted over the original gold. Thought I'd share them here. I got to wondering how one tel...

Re: Hand Framed oil on canvas
Lovely frame and effect. Need to try some of this gilt cream.
(The painting did remind me of our recent travesty of playing a test match in NZ though!)

Re: To bole or not to bole
Wow, that's some frame! Great tenacity to stick to such a big job. Hats off.
How's the mirror itself? And can it be easily replaced if it's scratched?
I'm also glad to hear the cheaper knife passes muster!

Re: To bole or not to bole
And one other thing. Make sure you buy the very best quality knife when trying to cut the gold leaf. Anything less will have you firing it across the room in frustration! So this one: https://www.goldleafsupplies.co.uk/kolner-professional-gilders-knife/ ..is worth the extra 30 quid compared to the ...

indeed, what a great project. And having just watched all the videos from the start of this thread I now appreciate the majesty of such Dutch frames! A real eye opener. Keep up the good work Timh and do post more results please.

Re: Deep rebate L / Canvas profile
I have the means to machine up that sort of thing, but I guess it depends on what quantity you're after, and a timescale. Also, I see you're in SE London as well - I'm based in Woolwich, SE18.

Re: gesso
Good grief! Where do you learn things like that? I was told and read these things in various times and places! The internet is a wonderful place but sifting out the correct strands of knowledge can be a hazy process sometimes. First thing to say is - get the RSG mix right. Everything hinges on that...
Re: gesso
Well the material cost of a compo beading is a few pence compared to the price of slicing the casting off a moulding you had to buy in. But that would be an ok thing to do if it's a one off or a repair situation. If however you're producing several frames with added ornament - compo is the way to g...
Re: gesso
AS you pointed out, the easy way to get beading is from R&H and if you're so sensible as to own a circular or band saw, then you can cut away the decoration and add it to your frame. These are really lovely looking frames. Definitely something to aspire to. May I ask, why did you choose to make...

Re: RSG Gesso
I've recently started sanding my gesso with mesh sanding discs, which are a revelation compared to your standard sandpaper as they don't clog. Perhaps this is old hat to framers who use gesso... does anyone else use them for this? As you rotate them whilst sanding, the dust just falls away... I have...
