Re: Glass backed frames

Thanks very much for that advice. I was not sure how the two sheets of glass were held in place but from what you say, it seems that wooden spacer does that. I think i shall have to try making such a frame and then see whether some of the problems I antipcate can be solved! Thanks again.

Glass backed frames

Please could someone point me to a website where I can learn how to make glass backed frames i.e. artwork sandwiched between two sheets of glass. Also, I am wanting to know how to make a perspex box frame and want to know how you join the perspex. Thanks and Happy New Year to everyone!

Framing papyrus

When framing papyrus, which type of tape should you use to adhere the papyrus to the mountboard you are laying it onto? Because this painting has been rolled up and will not lie flat, is it acceptable to use tape along the bottom as well? Also, is it always necessary to use another piece of mountboa...

Re: Using a ruler pen

Thanks Prospero and Roboframer for your advice. Went and bought today some Gouache paint and did not experience the problems of gaps in the ruling line. All seemed to work well and took your advice Prospero of working slowly. Job completed but I now just need to practice getting equally dense lines....

Using a ruler pen

Hi I've just bought a ruling pen (LIon 1375) and some Lion metallic ruling ink having seen decorative lines and washes been drawn on mounts on a recent course I attended. It looked easy enough when I was watching but when I attempt to draw a line using the ruling ink, it seems to come out unevenly.....

Re: Getting creases out of prints and posters

Thanks for the advice. I'll leave them as they are. Don't know anyone with a hotpress locally and obviously an expensive piece of kit to buy. Just somehow thought ironing was supposed to be more successful than it proved to be for me.

Re: Ever framed a football?

Lions sell square perspex boxes specifically for framing footballs....might save you a bit of work!

Getting creases out of prints and posters

Hi I have a couple of posters with creases in. I've tried ironing out the creases with an iron on low temperature and a piece of paper between the iron and poster but it has had no effect. I think I might be being too cautious. Are there any recommended ways of getting creases out? Is it recommended...

Re: Getting rid of mould from paintings

Thanks for the link...interesting. As you say, I think I better not risk experimenting with the customer's watercolour.

Re: Getting rid of mould from paintings

Thanks for the advice! Just wondered whether there was anything that a non-specialist paper conservator could do to improve the pic.

Re: unsticking mounts from paintings

Thanks for that. Just seen the client and he is happy for watercolour to remain stuck on board. The window mount came off very cleanly in the end so new mount will be able to lie flat against the painting and look good. I guess just replacing the window mount and acidic wood used as backing will imp...

Re: unsticking mounts from paintings

Just to say I've finally managed to get the mounts of the watercolours so thanks for all the advice. The painting is on paper and then stuck to another piece of board. Is it accetable to leave the paper on the board as to take it off would definitely be a paper conservator's job? I would obviously t...

Re: unsticking mounts from paintings

Thanks very much for all your advice. The painting is in fact painted directly onto board and the window mount comes almost exactly up to the edge of the painting. I'd never thought of peeling away layers of the mount...thanks for the idea. I had vaguely thought of a steam iron but that did seem a r...

Re: unsticking mounts from paintings

Wow! Thanks Mark for such a prompt and full reply on a Bank Holiday Sunday! The mount seems be stuck fast on the inside edge. I've only attempted to to peel it away on one of the four sides (before I posted this e-mail) right up to where it touches the painting and that is where I am nervous of proc...

unsticking mounts from paintings

Hi I have been given two very old watercolours to remount. The problem I have is that the mount has been glued onto the card on which the watercolour has been painted. I'm worried that if I try and gently peel it off, it may tear the painting. Does anyone know any tips for removing the mount from th...

It is Lineco's archival gum paper tape bought from Lions. If barrier card is not considered suitable as backing, what is its purpose do you know? Also as a matter of interest, if you don't use hardboard/MDF as a backing board, what do you use? Finally, I'm really thrilled to have discovered this for...

Thanks for prompt reply. I have now put my question in the correct place! Yes...I was referring to water activated hinging tape...perhaps I've been unlucky.
