Re: Price Check Please
but please don't try and judge my business or business model because quite frankly you couldn't begin to understand it just from reading that I am a commercial framer. Quote from AG I certainly wasn't judging your, or anyone else's business model. As for understanding - I used to run a trade framing...

Re: CMC VERSUS KEENCUT GOLD
I use a CMC. Don't do a lot of 'fancy' mount-cutting, as customers don't often request it, and I personally hate the 'overkill by CMC' look of over complicated mounts. As a business proposition, it is a no-brainer if you are doing enough mounts, or hoping to be doing enough mounts. As a 'one-man-ban...

Re: Price Check Please
stcstc That's exactly my point. You are NOT a bespoke framer, if you offer 10 mouldings. I have over 500. You say the job would only take 10 mins to do. If you stock 500 mouldings it can often take more than 10 mins to find the moulding!! There is no implied criticism to anyone. My point is about PR...

Re: Price Check Please
Some of the logic here is difficult to justify, and I think demonstrates the wide variation of pricing structures. In The case of AG and James, charging £21 + VAT or thereabouts, you are obviously considering the job to be "bunce" on top of what you are doing as a contract framer to earn a...

Re: Markup
Ricky Why is £50 expensive? That picture will probably stay on the customer's wall for 25 or 30 years. I filled up my car today, that was SIGNIFICANTLY more than £50. That will last less than a week. My price? to fit a picture and glass into an oval frame that cost me £14 would be £68. Worth every p...

Re: mitre trimmers
I really don't think that you could earn a living "fannying" about with a mitre trimmer. As ormond says if you want to be a professional, get professional equipment. On a serious note, if you are planning to set up a business, and can't afford £5 or £600 for a second hand Morso, then I wou...

My answer to that would be no, no and no.

There was quite a pronounced drop on that mount - I think it may be the angle of the photograph that makes it look even

Re: What would you do....
Hi Gus if you are new to this business, it looks like you have got the practical side of it well sorted, and have produced some good quality work. Well Done. Aesthetically, i think you have over-done the mounting somewhat, and have detracted from the picture. I would have done similar at the centre ...

Why are they not neatly lined up? We tried the layout in a more rigid format, and in more of a pyramid shape, and the customer preferred the latter, as it looks a little less formal.

No black core, it is a wooden fillet in the outer mount. The moulding is a standard Arqadia one

Here's one I did earlier
I noticed that this section of the forum hasn't had a lot of posts recently. I have started posting a few examples of framed work on my blog each week, really to show ideas of the sort of 'ordinary' work we do, and to give people an idea of price (although I deliberately do not give exact price, siz...

Re: Price Check Please
My computer says £44.60 This is inclusive of VAT, and in a City Centre retail environment. I disagree that this sounds too much, and would resent terribly any suggestion that anybody could get anything whatsoever, anything like what I offer, from Wilcos at ANY price !!!! Seriously, stop comparing be...

Re: Focus On Imaging
Yes I will be going.
I shall go on the train to avoid the M42 and the parking fee (its only about £12 return from Derby).
I think they charge for parking on any shows that are for the general public, whereas the Spring Fair is trade only

Re: When to quote a price?
I'm going to suggest that you come to my pricing seminar at the Framers Forum Live, as that may answer some of your questions . . . . As to your specific question here - yes, wherever possible I give a quote, not an estimate, then and there. If there are variables that I cannot price for, then I may...

Anyone interested in Photography?
Just to let you all know, there is the Format Photography Festival going on in Derby starting later this week. Well worth a visit if you are into that sort of thing. And if you are coming over, do call in and see us for a chat, as we are just round the corner! Check out http://www.gessoandbole.com/2...
