Re: Chop service
I regularly use Lion’s Chop Service mainly for the more upmarket mouldings. However I always compare the stick length price for what I need to the chop price. It is frequently the case that their chop service is cheaper than buying the lengths I may need. If it works out cheaper for me to buy the le...

Re: Underpinner (and other machinery) Hacks
Great tips. I’m not sure if this is a hack as such but I discovered that the measure stop on my Morso was separating from the fence by about a millimetre when I pushed the moulding into it. I thought this could be a problem if sometimes I pushed the moulding tight causing it to separate and other ti...

Re: Critiquing again
Very nice and thanks for sharing. I have a question or two if you don’t mind. You say you added an acrylic wash to oak. Was that just on the spacer with a reddish colour and did you mix water into the paint? Or did you also add the colour to the actual moulding, if so it looks a bit darker like a ve...

Re: I Wish I'd Framed That.
I also agree. The framers job is to present the art in the best possible way and to enhance it, not to compete with it. The evidence of a good job is when, as you suggest, the viewer sees the artwork and admires it for what it is. The frame in some ways is always secondary. Having said that this art...

Re: Best method of cleaning up the back of this frame
Question. Do you really need to use the hanger which is attached to the strut back? If not it seems like you have enough room to fit a double backing board of sorts. You could add a bit of a spacer using left over materials such as foam board or MDF off cuts and then fit another backing board using ...

Re: What do we do with left over pieces of mountboad in unpopular colours.
I take mine to the local primary school for their arts and crafts work. Other than that it is simply paper/card. Bin it. It is recyclable and will come back to you as toilet paper or some other useful item.

Re: What is the strongest archival or conservation grade glue?
I would be happy to simply use PVA for this. If the painting is already done onto MDF depending on how thick it is it may not require a further backing board? If it is onto thinner, say 2mm mdf board I would back it onto 5 or 6mm board. The method I use I picked up on this forum. Place an even layer...

Re: Morso/Underpinner angles
In my experience this has more to do with the Morso blades set up than the underpinner. I have three sets of blades and of these I have one set that just sit perfectly on the Morso. Whenever this set is on my cuts are perfect and they join perfectly on my underpinner. I hate it when I have to send t...

Re: What stain brand is best with obeche
I recently made several frames very similar to this one for a customer. I stained it with Dark Jacobean and the finish was very good after a medium oak wax applied.

Re: bonding a canvas
I generally apply both coats to the base board the second after the first has become tacky effectively sealing the board and then carefully lay on the canvas smoothing it out as you go. Then place a second board the same size or slightly larger and put heavy weights onto this. (Originally learned th...

Re: bonding a canvas
I believe Copydex is ammonia based and a natural rubber latex which can oxidise after a while. PVA (polyvinyl acetate) does not have this problem and may be better. I have had old canvasses to frame and have successfully bonded them to a 5mm MDF base using two coats of PVA.. Allow the first coat to ...

Re: Framing a Kilt
That’s awesome. What a privilege. I’m sure others on here will have good advice for you but. They are rather heavy items and need to be folded in a certain way. I would make sure the substrate is good and strong and can support the weight and then I would treat it like any other fabric/ garment in t...

Re: Mat decoration tape
These are examples of deep bevel edges, two with coloured self adhesive tapes and one with the Royal Stewart tartan ribbon. The painting is of the Scots Dragoon Guards marching along Princes Street, Edinburgh. They all went to the same customer, the Pipe Major. 99C07A54-091A-4F79-9680-131A88579AA5.j...
