Re: Solid White Oak or Oak Tray moulding

You could use F8 Oak from Rose & Hollis. It's a flat 12mm thick fillet, 47mm wide.
Join it up to size on the vertical.

Then make a flat frame with say, F5 but a bit smaller than the F8 frame. Nail/screw this to the base so you won't see it from the sides and there you should have it.

Re: Lost Morso tool

I don't own a Morso

'Sold it years ago.

That's why I've got the tool you're looking for.
You can have it as long as you pay the postage to send it to you. It's all quite rusty now, but will clean up with some light oil and wire-wool.
PM me with your address and I'll pop it in a Jiffy bag.

Re: Single Use Plastic Packaging.

I don't buy in pre-finished mouldings so I have no experience of the type of packaging you're talking about. But I think it's all a result of framers complaining about the condition of mouldings received through the couriers. I'd imagine Lion were trying to give as much protection as possible before...

Re: Texturing Gel?

I've never used the stuff, which leaves me eminently qualified to comment on the varnish. There might be something a bit off with the sample you have. Lion is brilliant at signposting framers to various and often arcane artists products. But if you want to go a bit deeper, its often best to buy from...

Re: Perfect Joins

Whilst agreeing with justintime about the glue left to cure for 24hr, I always leave the clamp on for the 24hr. The clamps are cheap so having several of them means you can leave the frames strapped up overnight. All my frames are raw wood based, so I secure the corners by cross pinning with long fr...

Re: Perfect Joins

An underpinner is great if you have a busy workshop and many frames to make and join. But an underpinner 'takes no prisoners'. Get even the slightest error in your cutting and the underpinner will amplify the mistake on the joints. So if you're not in a great hurry and you really really want the per...

Re: And ANOTHER BIG ONE -

Now that's interesting. Thanks for that. The customer drove down to near Liverpool and we both met at a motorway services. He had to have an overnight stay. The current plan is to build a crate and ship it on a pallet back to Scotland. 'Much more convenient. Have you ever driven from Aberystwyth to ...

Re: And ANOTHER BIG ONE -

Well, it came all the way down from Scotland, of all places.

The customer has it for a painting by the Scottish artist, James Paterson R.S.A.

The next problem is how to get it all the way back up there.

And ANOTHER BIG ONE -

This came in the other day. IMG_3486.JPG The last one was heavy enough but this one is a two-man lift. I work alone here, so I'll have to ask a neighbour to help me lift it on to the bench. I could ask my wife but then we wouldn't be speaking to each other for the rest of the day. It's a 19th centur...

Re: Antique frames re sized needed? Also fabric mounts

Hi there I’m looking for a framer who can re size antique frames for me
That'll be me then.

The best way forward is to e-mail me a photo of the frame you'd like resized and I can advise on the work required and an estimate cost.

Re: Waxing Bare wood frames

Two good answers to your query. The beauty is, there's not much you can do to go wrong. Open the tin, make sure it's a neutral or clear wax, maybe read the instructions (who does that?) and rub it on. Everyone has their tips and tricks for getting a good wax finish but have a go and see how you get ...

If you have your saws running, then you won't hear the Hydrovane.
They are however pre-programed to kick in during your favourite music tracks.

Re: Compressors for multiple machines

You are best off with a Hydrovane compressor. These are built to be left running continuously and will feed all your machines going at the same time. You should expect to pay around £1700 new but I'd be looking for a second-hand model at half that price. You can buy a cheaper piston compressor that ...

Often hard to get right but for all the work that needed to go into that frame, it hasn't been allowed to become more important than the artwork.

It happens a lot. The only way of preventing it is to have the discipline to remember to clip the nozzle back down after use. Otherwise, you need to prise the nozzle up again with the flat of a screwdriver, or pull it off altogether and clean out the nozzle with a nail or some other. Even if you hav...

Re: Large vintage posters - help please

My suggestion was for a visually pleasing effect. Raising it slightly from the back mount and with a 'considered' gap between the paper edge and sight edge of the moulding could give it a bit of 'presence' within the frame. After that just use all the usual museum level materials - sandwich some she...
