Re: Gesso / Crackle query

Re: Gesso / Crackle query
Can you post an example of your parchment and gilt? Would be a real treat.

Re: Distressing!
Thanks, Graysalchemy, sort of knew you were joking. But I like these frames too much to laugh. Thanks, Prospero... Looks like the same hand. Are we allowed to know where you got the photo?? I've tried to make something similar, and just couldn't get it. My moulding didn't have the gorgeousness which...

Re: Gesso / Crackle query
Is that why so many daft punk painters are opting for the minimal no-frame look, Prospero?
Is that why the shitty paint used by daft punk painters are peeling off in berg size lumps?
You carry on, but dinnae mock the old ways.

Re: Float Mounting Large Pastels
How much pastel is there? Are there areas where pressure can be applied without fear of altering the image? Fixative only goes so far, and many artists don't like using it too much anyway. I'd seriously consider suggesting that you can only guarantee its complete adhesion (on all four edges - buckli...

Re: Float Mounting Large Pastels
I'd be tempted to say don't, but you could try the hedgehog method. Nightmare, good advice above. Will the glue ever hold long term, or worse, short term. Will the pastel belly out against the glass? Presumably it will hung at an angle rather than with mirror clips. The glue will come lose either i...

Re: Novice advice needed: hand finishing wooden frames for o
I'd also add, at a risk of contradicting a member with a zillion times more experience: if you're going to the trouble of making a handmade frame the corners are everything.... Try not to be too concertina like with them, let the hand flow around the corners --- pull them together. It will make for ...

Re: Framers educating amatuer artists
Worth remembering that the artists' work is more often than not speculative in nature, there is no guarantee they will be paid. Therefore in essence all artists are amateurs. The commercial framer on the other hand will be paid come what may. That said, I have heard of high end framers being generou...

Re: Gilding over cast resin
Wonder how you got on??? I've just piled on RSG gesso onto some epoxy resin fake gold mouldings from the 70s in the hope of giving it the handmade loving craftsman look.
Nasty poxy stuff, the gesso popped up in days. Best place for the junk was the skip, not even the fire.

Re: Distressing!
Look carefully, Graysalchemy, the line between the leaf and the black bole is very delicate. It's been done by a skilled operator. A bit above your average Thai takeaway.
I'd hate to say what the whole kit will be retailed for. top end of a five figure sum. (Don't fall off your seat)

Re: Distressing!
How about this one?
Nice deep and full profile, but I like the layering of darks. Probably harder than it looks to achieve.... Certainly for a novice like moi.

Re: Gesso / Crackle query
Nope, there it is; fabric rolled up, cracked, then laid down.
Presumably the surrounding surface integrity is pulled together by careful application of layers of gesso, subsequently sanded?
Wonderful craftsmanship.
(Particularly like the black one)

Re: Gesso / Crackle query
Ooooh, there are some fabulous frames here. There used to be a framer near Smithfield years ago who produced lovely crackle work.
Not sure this thread has the definitive answer, if perhaps I should re-read it.
Gorgeous work.

Re: Distressing!
All very trad; gesso, white metal, that yellow dye (forget its name), then distressed.
(Still reeling from the Lowry anecdote, good one).

Don't want to replicate this..... But how on earth was it distressed, any idea? A machine, a chain, not one punch at a time surely?
It is a new frame.
