Re: Framing a wedding Dress
According to Brides magazine, the average cost of a wedding dress is £1340, for something you'll (hopefully!) only wear once. Therefore, £2000 to preserve it, and be able to look at everyday for the rest of your life seems quite reasonable! Failing that, you could suggest to the customer that she ha...

Re: GCF qualification
I wouldn't normally say this, but here goes... I disagree! There, I said it! You can teach and assess design and aesthetics, but in order to do so, you have to first understand the basic elements and principles of design. Regardless of whether you actually like a piece of design, you can asse...

Re: GCF qualification
I agree with Grays, about design and aesthetics. Regardless of what you are framing, or to what level of conservation, it still has to look right, otherwise what's the point? This is fundamental to the proficiency of a good framer, and yet isn't tested. As has been mentioned previously, many people ...

Re: GCF qualification
Perhaps a nationally recognised qualification may help to raise the awareness of the skills of a professional framer? City & Guilds offer a picture and frame restoration course, at various levels, and maybe it is time for the FATG to collaborate with such a body to develop a complete framing cou...

On second thoughts, they might not be wide enough. I guess it depends on how much of a diff you are demonstrating to the customer.

How about poster hangers? From what I can remember, they can be opened up to accommodate different thicknesses.
Frosted hangers
Or, how about slide binders from a stationery shop?

Re: Three in one
Ah! Cheers Robo. Having sewn patches on bike jackets in the past (in my days as a roughtie-toughtie biker chick), I know that they can be a bit fiddly. Pre-punching the mountboard sounds like a good idea.

Re: Three in one
Nice one Robo, good choice of moulding.
Can I just ask, did you stitch the patches onto ribbon/cotton tape, and then feed that through slots in the mountboard?

Sorry to be a bit of a numpty, but how secure is an online backup? Is at risk from hacking or server failure? I couldn't even begin to consider it at the moment with an internet speed of 0.52mbps but it maybe worth considering in the future. Is it preferable to using an external drive?

Re: Purchase advice
As An Old Master has said, anything other than a very basic level of framing will require some investment. £4k sounds about right to me, but you could save some squids buying second hand. If you hope to be producing 'proper' frames, (potentially for commercial purposes), then you will need 'proper' ...

It all depends how good your driving is.
Hubby and I used to keep a mental list of 'who not to employ' based on the quality of the driving of anyone in a sign written vehicle!!!
The list was quite long.

I've seen these frames advertised in Stamp & Coin Mart, and often wondered if it would be possible to replicate it: http://prinz.co.uk/images/4833-sl.jpg The objects are held in place by two sheets of silicone. I'm not sure if there is a patent on these frames, which if there is, may prevent you...

Re: working from home with visiting customers
Given the current state of some high streets, and ever increasing parking charges and restrictions, it is prudent to consider all options when setting up a new business. A high street location is not necessarily the best location for all framing businesses, depends on the business model. Kev's frien...

Re: £9.99 electric stapler in Lidl today
Prospero, I suspect they can probably still make small batteries to hold a charge and take an infinite number of recharging cycles, but if they did, then you wouldn't have to buy a replacement. It's called built-in obsolescence. :x When my Nokia 5210 died some time back, I searched high and low for ...
