Re: Cutting boxes on the CMC

Companies like Kite Packaging can supply you with double wall card for less than most of the framing boards https://www.kitepackaging.co.uk/scp/cardboard-sheets/double-wall-cardboard-sheets/ . I see Dermot had written about Kite.... For further design inspiration https://www.zund.com/media/2041/down...

Re: Damien Hirst aluminium laminate print

That looks to be a print cold mounted to DiBond, or similar ACM material. The subframe will be attached to the ACM using UHB / VHB tape. I'd consider a wooden frenchcleat at the top, with something like https://www.3m.co.uk/3M/en_GB/p/d/b40068942/ LR&B . I'd consider using 3 or even 6mm Dibond a...

Re: Photo printing

My default response would be no, don't go there.* My day to day work is printing - I hang out here, as 30% of what I do gets handed over to framers, so I need to know what and why, if not how, and I enjoy the comaderie - and I've spent a couple of decades learning to deal with colour management, to ...

Re: Glass vs Perspex - How big is too big for glass

I regularly switch out printed and mounted (my side of the work) images for a client who has many sets of frames. Largest are 60x40", with 3mm AR glass. Most of the frames have a 6(ish)mm piece of ply, with a ply sub frame (12ish mm x 4ish") that screws (pocket holes) into the main frame (...

Re: I am thinking about starting a blog for my business.

Content and presentation. You're very good at writing content, you've got years worth of script material, much of it here. The challenge is how to present it to camera. Lighting and camera kit are not terribly difficult to master, but production is far simpler in a stills world, as you choose single...

Giclee*, sure I can do that for you, but it'll cost you extra.

Re: Big advice wanted for a big frame

You might be onto something with the barge poles - nice, well seasoned wood, probably far better quality than construction lumber. Table saw, router, (band saw?), all set to go for the wood. Backings - acm is available in large sheets, if this is something you routinely use (if not, you're looking a...

"Just got the new C2 cutter head for our SteelTrak - first impressions are it produces less curl on LHS, and slightly less rolling of edges. Down side, it is larger and weighs more, so the cutting head drifts down to the bottom of the machine, where it lurks, waiting to take a bite at my shins....

The artists around here would not do that! They tend to prefer duct tape, presumably because that is not usuually safely removable from the back of their artworks. I saw one on saturday with pink duct tape, I did not know that there was such a thing as pink duct tape. Well, you learn something new ...

Re: Frames Pinned Shut

<rant> Finally opened all two dozen frames, ranging from 600x750 to 1000x1500. Those that were assembled for the last show by the framers (4 new frames, the rest reused) have been stapled, except where the original frames were screwed shut. Not points, but staples, which is a right royal PITbA, beca...

Just don't confuse it with MEK, which is rather more like an evil 160proof Bulgarian vodka, we once had in the studios many moons ago.

Re: Frames Pinned Shut

Thanks Steve. Justin, unfortunately, I'm merely a humble print monkey, and don't have access to such lovely machines. I also was unsure about having anything so close to the sight line. I do know what you mean about future problems, but I'm running short on other options in the time scale. I have re...

Re: Frames Pinned Shut

So, to answer my questions. Slim econo spacers are not available from Lion in white or black, so I'm cutting 3mm wide strips (the rabbet width is 4.9mm) of 3mm black Forex PVC, which is already coated one face with acrylic adhesive. My plan is to adhere this to the underside of the glass all round. ...

Re: Frames Pinned Shut

It does make sort of sense. I guess the gallery>framers communication had fallen down slightly, given that all their other frames are cycled through shows. When the gallery sells work, the print price excludes the framing. The frames do have the contents of a previous show in them, so not too wierd....

Frames Pinned Shut

Afternoon all. A gallery client of ours has sets of frames that come into us, (we print and mount the photographic work), then install in the frames. This normally works pretty well as the frames are often of slightly varying sizes and proportions, and we produce the drymounted prints to spec. Have ...

Re: Van livery/signage

Get a decent sign maker to design the van. Text only on a white van often looks very cheap these days, unless designed to perfection (phone number over two lines does not improve legibility or retention). No need for a full wrap, but folks are used to seeing more than just words and numbers... Just ...

Re: Work Benches

Given the increasing price of sheet materials, not a bad price.

For an 8x4, I'd want centre legs, and a lot more more support under the top, to keep it flat, but I reckon it should be adequate at smaller sizes.

Also like those end shelves

Re: Fixings for Heavy MDF Art in Tray Frames

Not hard to cut with a circular saw on a track - pick a sunny day and cut a batch outside. I've done them on a little battery powered ryobi saw on a couple of occasions, ripped down a left over half sheet of 18?mm mdf into future use pieces.
