Re: Never ever or sometimes ?

I have no problem with placing glazing directly over an open edition poster sans spacer. The problem with micro-condensation is, I believe, somewhat exaggerated. Most art is displayed in areas where there are no great swings in temperatures, and where there is, it tends to change slowly. I don’t lik...

Re: Christmas Shopping

Like Mike, I’m doing most of my shopping on-line this year. I hate having to walk 2 miles through a parking lot in the bitter cold and having to take elbows to the ribs when I go to a shopping mall. It’s nice to be able to sit in the warm cozy confines of your living room sipping the beverage of you...

Re: Help with Pricing

The problem with trying to explain pricing is that if you ask 10 different framers, you are likely to get a dozen different answers – none of them completely wrong (or 100% right for that matter). Many of us view our pricing as proprietary; not so much that we don’t want to let our competitors know ...

Re: multiple photos under a single mount.

For those size images, I would have a tendency to bypass the dry mounting altogether and simply tape them in place behind the mount. Old photos seem to have a built in curl to them, but if you place them in the heat press for a time, that should eliminate enough of the curling so that they should st...

Re: Mounting a Cibachrome Print

I would give a very strong caution about trying to dry mount a Ciba/Ilfochrome print. The surfaces are more fragile than standard photos. Even the mildest heat is likely to cause the dreaded “orange peel” effect, so I would suggest you stay away from a heat press. From a conservation standpoint, myl...

Re: Pinning Awkward Shaped Mouldings

Are you talking about a profile similar to this http://i493.photobucket.com/albums/rr300/maltwit/M120.jpg If so what we have done to help join these “swan” and “cove” moulding is construct a series of dowels and “shims” joined at a right angle. If the hold down of the underpinner cannot be placed di...

Re: It looks like the Christmas rush has started.

I agree that renting/leasing a CC machine can be a very expensive way to go. We decided at the onset that if we used the standard accounting depreciation of (electronic) equipment of three years, we would save money by purchasing the terminal outright. The negative to buying your own is that if they...

Re: It looks like the Christmas rush has started.

I resisted taking credit cards for almost a year after we opened. We finally gave in and established a merchant account. Nobody like to have 1.5 - 2.5% of their sales skimmed off the top from the blood sucking leeches at the bank, but we’ve found that it is a necessary cost of doing business. Hardly...

Re: mirror / mount

I wouldn’t pretend to have the skills to attack a project like that. This looks like a specialty of a stained glass artist. I used to have a friend with whom I had a close working relationship who did a lot of this kind of glass etching for restaurants, bars, office buildings, etc. I believe that to...

Re: It looks like the Christmas rush has started.

I wish you well! Despite some advertisements for Christmas on television the Christmas season generally doesn’t start here until just before Thanksgiving (the last Thursday in November). We’re expecting (hoping for) a seasonal upturn, but with the economy still sluggish, we aren’t anticipating a ban...

Re: Framing Gallery Wraps

I just recently refused to stretch a giclèe. In the past we’ve had too many whose surfaces have cracked and chipped along the edge of the stretcher/strainer bars when the canvas is brought around. I have learned that I cannot tell in advance which ones will do that and which ones will not. It probab...

As a proud American I take umbrage at the fact that you are referring to Congressman Harry Reid as one of the most influential, hard working, deceptive sleazeball politicians in Washington.

He is a Senator!

Re: For anyone who is just setting up a web-site

There are also paid submission sites to which you can subscribe. When I first went on line, I submitted info (and $29) to I need hits . Within a week I was listed on over 300 search engines. At this point, I would still recommend that new web pages pay a few buck (quid) and get listed as soon as the...

Re: Medal framing

There are two types of military medals we commonly see. If it is a medal with pins soldered on the back designed to push directly through fabric and to be held in place with a spring-like fastener thingie, we just push the pin through the backing material (usually mount board) and attach the fastene...

Re: Shadowboxing gold sword

I would be careful of using Mighty Mounts . They are made of a type of plastic that tends to craze and break after a few years. It may be a result of an exposure to light (not necessarily UV, but I’m not sure). I have had a few coin holders returned because inexplicably the “finger holder” thingies ...

Could you buy a large canvas banner sign and tie it onto the scaffold above street level, but out of the way of the workmen?

Obviously, with your business name and, maybe something like “making it better for you!”

Re: Ever framed a football?

I’ve never used it, but I have heard of some people inflating a ball with an injectable foam product that, when it sets, takes the shape of its container.

Sorry, I don’t know the name of it, and I doubt that it is “archival”. :)
