Re: most valuable piece you have framed

When we were based in London we framed for many prestigious clients including national galleries and seriously wealthy individuals. I think literally billions of pounds worth of art must have passed through our workshop. I know for certain that one particular painting was valued at seven million. Fo...

Hate to disagree with Prospero, but Button polish is not the basic, but the purist form of shelac polish. It gets is name from the shelac discs "buttons" of the highest grade. Cheapest are the shelac sealers which are thinner and contain less shelac. Most of the other colours (Garnet, red,...

Re: Indian painting on paper / cloth - a big one ...

I would not try to keep it flat by pressing it against the Perspex. There are conservation issues here with regard to this. Also the thing looks quite bulky and it will not flatten evenly. Also a concern would be that at that size anything pressing against 3mm acrylic might cause it to bow outwards ...

Re: Customer Access

I worked from home when I started and it was a bit of a nuisance because I value my privacy. Most people respect this, but you must be prepared for the fact that some people will turn up unannounced, while you are watching your favourite TV programme, or having dinner with friends. Once somebody eve...

Re: Fixing backboard when flush with moulding

What backing board are you using?

If it is MDF or something hard you can bevel it with a small plane.

If foamboard you can often "squash" the edges to get a similar result

Another alternative is to make small triangular nicks and use brads or pins.

Re: Ethics

This is an issue that we have come against often, especially regarding conservation issues. E.g. a customer wants a valuable print dry mounted or straight against the glass. We take the view that all we can do is point out the dangers and in some cases ask the customer to sign a paper stating that t...

Re: attaching stretched canvas to mount board

I'd thought about using smalls screws - through the back (using a reasonably rigid backing board with kraft board over that) and into the canvas's frame) to avoid the need for an aperture and the risk of seeing the aperture edges. Dya think that'd work? Hi Lynda. Yes that is exactly what I do, Use ...

I have been asked to frame a high end photographic print. could be worth 10K or so they spent 55% of cost of print on framing 5.5 grand on framing  I thought I charged a lot Seriously though if it is already mounted just frame it as you would any other thing using good quality materials and ...

Hi and welcome Are you planning on setting up a full scale business or working from your new home? We have recently moved from the UK to Portugal, so here are a few things we have found. Electric supply in Europe is Ok although you will need to change plugs. One thing you may need to look at (depend...

I have framed mamy pieces of the Berlin Wall over the years as I know have many other framers. In fact there is probably a greater tonnage of "genuine Berlin Wall " concrete in frames than there ever was in the wall

Re: underpinning or hoffman

I use a CS88 and think it a great machine, the merits have been discussed here many times. Turn it over and use a hammer......serious. I have found that it is easier and safer to give any slight protrusions a rub over with a coarse metal working file. It only takes a few strokes and there is no dang...

Also bear in mind that when you cut boards on a saw you loose the width of the sawblade each cut (typically 2mm) so on a board 48 inches wide you will not get, say 4 x 12 inch pieces

Re: Cutting MDF Backing Board

We have an old style bookbinders guillotine that we use, end shears also will work, but struggle with 3mm. obviously a table saw is best, but dust noise and space are a major issue.

Glass and Mirror will supply cut sizes just as they will with glass
