Re: Which paint to use for rebate?
The paper is to protect the picture or board from the paint. The bit that is in contact with the glass should be painted or it will look strange from the front

Re: Which paint to use for rebate?
We generally use gouache because it is water based. Let it dry for a day or so and paint only the face and the side which is against the glazing. Line the top with a heavy weight paper

Re: How to cut this wrapped moulding ?
You could try putting a strip of thin MDF against the back of the mouldingso that the cut is supported during the sawing

Re: Morso, Rebate Support
we got fed up messing about with double sided tape so we got some strong magnets from Axminster http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=19790&name=magnet&user_search=1&sfile=1&jump=0 and set them into a couple of pieces of 50 x 20mm timber. They work perfectly and are stuck on t...

Re: WORKSHOP TEMPERATURE
First thing would be to find out what is going on. Get one of these or something similar http://www.preservationequipment.com/Store/Products/Equipment-$4-Tools/Instruments-$4-Meters/Thermohygrometer- For constant monitoring and viewing changes data loggers are a better, but more expensive option htt...

Re: WORKSHOP TEMPERATURE
It is not just temperature that will affect storage content but Relative Humidity. This is linked to but not only affected by temperature the amount of moisture in the air is the main problem. I have written a little about this on my website. http://tlframing.co.uk/1_3_2_humidity.php The article mai...

Re: Making your own molding.
We have a router used in a table as a small spindle moulder. We don’t as a rule make mouldings (although we have on occasion made small quantities), but find it very useful for adapting mouldings, rounding an edge to make a part cushion, putting a step in the sight edge, little things that mean we c...

Re: Which underpinner?
I have used a CS88 for many years and we join a LOT of hardwoods, I have found it to be an excellent workhorse. It is true that the clamping mechanism is not the best, but it is adequate. I think if you are considering the CS-79 and hanger conversion kit you would need to use it an awful lot to just...

Re: Mounting a Cibachrome Print
It's always inportant to remember that photographs have their own pH value. Ciba's (now known as Ilfochromes) have a natural rating of 6.5 to 6.8( as long as they have been processed correctly) So it is best to find a archival board in the same range of pH value You will not find a board in this ra...

I agree that a personal recommendation is always best. As an alternative anybody looking for a conservator in ANY discipline should start with the conservation register

Re: What to Glaze and not glaze
Depends on many things, personal preferences, where they are hanging and size. We generally recommend glazing if pictures are in a public space for security reasons. Glazing can protect the surface from dust and general dirt. It is true that the varnish will do this, but eventually they will need cl...
