Re: Stretching Canvas

I totally respect the fact that others get on well using canvas pliers but I've never got on with them - even when i borrowed some of the really posh(over £100 a pair) ones. The only time i ever regretted that was the job i had about 6 years ago when i had to stretch 70 canvasses in a week(smallest ...

Re: Price check time again?

Well, around here it's approx €1.10 So if it costs £1.00 your way i'm off on pricing However if your .60p i'm in the right ball park. Current exchange rate is 1.18 euros per pound In London a Mars bar is about 50p A cappuccino is £2 to £2.50(but we all drink skinny latte here darling - cappuccino i...

Re: Comments on Price Check thread

I'll second what Ormond says. I haven't posted on the pricing thread because i don't see what i charge as being relevant Its says "10 or 15 minute job". No such thing in my workshop - almost all frames start as bare timber, get joined then power sanded then hand sanded. Even for a small fl...

Re: Mr. Harry Patch - The Last Tommy

It is amazing and gratifying what our ancestors went through and did for us. Sometimes i wonder - if they knew what we'd turn out like would they have bothered? RIP Harry Patch RIP Henry Allingham Who would have thought that being over 110 years old would become unfashionable so quickly? Amazing to...

she said that happened to some of their customers. Please be assured that its not personal. Can't imagine why those people are still customers. Guess I must be one of those - but not much longer. I can sympathise. I'm a mile from them, and I haven't used them for about 7 years, which is crazy( and ...

Re: How should I do this?

I agree with Bill. But don't decieve him - introduce yourself as a fellow framer. Try and get him into a geek chat. If he's totally disinterested in discussing his work then the chances are that he's not enjoying the job. If he is using duct tape on a £1200 antique, signed lithograph, there is proba...

Re: 8 sided frame

Having tried it both ways I'd recommend using a good quality mitre saw over a Morso. Be aware that you'll probably need to tidy up the cuts by sanding if you want really crisp joints. Its all fiddly and there'll be a certain amount of trial and error, but charge extra for the hassle factor and it wo...

Re: To 'Sandwich' or not to 'Sandwich' ?

How do you seal the glazing to the frame? I don't understand the logic of this. Conservators always like this to be done, unless you are taping around the sandwich. It stops insects getting in. Most insects will enter a frame from the front, squeezing between the glass and the frame. My tame paper ...

Re: Polcore

I'm wondering if heating the poly with a heat gun and clamping it in a jig while it cools would allow you to make strange curvy frames. Jaysis! If you try this be sure to wear good breathing apparatus with an organics filter on - that stuff will give off some seriously nasty fumes if you get it war...

Re: The Masking Tape Topic

"Masking tape has no place in a professional framer's workshop" It would be more accurate to say that masking tape has no place in a professional's frames. I use quite a lot of masking tape. I use it for - - Holding mitres together while the glue dries(especially good for unfinished mould...

Re: To 'Sandwich' or not to 'Sandwich' ?

I almost always tape. One of the shops i worked in years ago did it and i always thought it made sense until i had to refit stuff that had been framed like this years before at the same shop and i discovered the horrors of old masking tape. Consequently i do it with P90. Adds to ones materials costs...

Hi Steve My AVG software thinks www.ygregistry.cn is a legit site, but I've no idea how safe that makes it. Some security software thinks everything from China is bogus, but it looks like a legitimate domain registration/hosting site to me. I'm assuming that the address they are talking about - “fro...

Re: Reducing the Depth of Lion’s Spacers – Wood & Minerva

I use a thicknesser for such tasks Here's one - http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-DeWalt-DeWalt-DW733-Thicknesser-577405.htm Much cheaper to buy one second hand on ebay - there are always a few there To use a thicknesser like the one above to trim down spacer you will probably need to make a jig, w...

Where i come from 'floater' means something else :giggle: The problem i have with floaters(apart from the toilet reference) is that pretty much all the readymade moulding i have seen is naff in the extreme. I've done quite a few having made my own moulding from high quality timber and managed to mak...

Re: Aluminium Frames - much call for ?

I don't like them so i don't offer them. In point of fact i think they are almost always revolting, but like Robo says the very thin ones can work where wood would be too thick. Eg Gilbert and George About twice a year i get asked for Ali frames, and i reckon that on average i talk 1 of those 2 into...

Re: What is a photograph?

The word 'photograph' was coined about 170 years ago. The cunning coiner combined the greek words for 'light' and 'write'. For me, any image which begins with the capturing of light is a photograph, no matter what the equipment used to capture the light or what is done to the image afterwards. The r...
