Re: Removing sticky residue
Thanks, I decided to leave the current job alone as the residue is at the back of the image, but next time I get a job where the residue is along a border, I might give the lighter fluid a try.

Removing sticky residue
I've got an aerial photograph to reframe. It's 50 x 40cm and about 70 years old, but I think it was last framed more recently than that (maybe 20-30 years ago?). It had been taped with masking tape across the top, which I've removed but it's left a sticky residue on the back of the photograph. It wo...

Re: Drymounting or selfadhesive board
If you start off at one end and every thing looks fine, how do you correct it when a crease starts to appear by the time to get to the other end. You make sure it doesn't! :D The first s/a board I did was a large poster and I was very nervous about doing it but I did it in much the same way as in t...

Ed, have a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI9YvtnVEj0
I found this very nerve-racking the first time I did it but it was much easier in the end than I expected.

Re: Damage from glass, not
That makes sense now, thanks. The customer doesn't want a mount, so assuming the poster is going to be hung in the same environment, I take it that it will be OK to reframe it against the glass? Having been clipped with no frame, it's had a lot of air circulating around it. I usually seal up a sandw...

Damage from glass, not
When delivering a picture back to a customer’s house, the next-door neighbour gave me a poster to take away in order to recommend some frame options. The poster is about 55 years old, and has been sandwiched between 4mm thick glass and ½” thick plywood, held in place with clips, no mount, no frame. ...

Re: FrameCo Benchmaster
The Benchmaster is a good little machine for low volume framing - and small enough for even the most mini-micro set-up. Even if you end up finding that it's not particularly suitable for oak, you'll find it very useful for softwood frames. Hardwood wedges will cost you about a tenner for a few thous...

Re: FrameCo Benchmaster
I'd be as concerned about the mitre cutting as the pinning. If you're smaller than micro, I take it you don't have a Morso? Personally I wouldn't like to mitre cut hardwood mouldings with a hand saw but perhaps you're more adventurous than me! Re pinning, bear in mind that you will need wedges that ...

Re: Framing Chinese scrolls without a mount
You say tightly rolled for years, doesn't this tell you what they think of them ? Now that the husband has become disabled as a result of a distressing medical condition, the scrolls have assumed an importance which they didn't previously have. They now want to have that reminder of a happy time in...

Re: Framing Chinese scrolls without a mount
Thanks for the replies. To answer the questions: The scrolls are about 20" x 16". They're of sentimental value only. They're for an elderly couple so the conservation aspect isn't critical. I've had them under weights for several days (as did the customer before they gave me them) but they...

Framing Chinese scrolls without a mount
I've got a mental block about how best to frame a current job. It's a couple of Chinese scrolls which have been tightly rolled for years. I've tried to flatten them, but not completely successfully. They're not rice paper, but it's a special paper of some sort. It wouldn't be a problem, except that ...

Re: Terminology: liner
I'll leave it to an expert to define "liner" but if you're in the dark about any other terminology, you might find an explanation in The Framing Oracle. See the box near the top of the left hand column of this forum - if you click the box, it will take you to some good resources including ...

Yes I get this too - it's all part of life's rich tapestry in the framing industry isn't it!BeccaB wrote:... the prices are advertised per meter, they take my order in metres yet apparently send the order and invoice in feet?

Re: mainline mouldings customer website
The T&Cs on the FrameBook site say that the supplier is Mainline, although that's not much help if the framer isn't familiar with FrameBook printouts. If you would like to purchase mouldings from this library please add your favourite products to a project and then print it off ... Take it along...

Re: Supplier practices, do they all do it ?
Cost a job for what you consume , not what ends up in the frame. And that's precisely the problem with over-supplies. You quote the customer based on a full length of 3m, because as you say, even if the job only needs 2.5m, you can't do anything with the leftover 0.5m. So if the distributor sends y...

Re: Supplier practices, do they all do it ?
I'm still fairly new to framing and it was a bit of a culture shock to discover that you don't always get what you order. I've spent nearly all my working life in business-to-business and dealing with trade supplies, albeit in a different industry, but I'd never encountered the notion that you don't...

Re: Trying to find a discontinued moulding
The customer is really disappointed that the above moulding has been discontinued and I've been trying to find a similar replacement but without success. It needs to be very bright silver, ie chrome-looking. I've looked at all the web sites I can think of, got a few likely-looking samples, but they'...
