Re: To wrap or not to wrap

Thanks for all your replies. Like prospero, i like the customer to see the finished frame on an easel.

However, there are lots of useful suggestions so will have a think

To wrap or not to wrap

Was wondering what other framers did? I normally use handiwrap around the edges, but i tend to wait until the customer comes to see the finished frame, then do it. That is fine, but i have just finished 35 hand finished frames for a customer who left me to choose how to frame his stuff. I want him t...

Re: You could make one hell of a frame with this!

Part of this is now a couple of new door sills, the remainder will be a window, but i will be able to make plenty of mouldings. It makes you think that if you had the time, you could make a load of mouldings from the size it started, and the cost was £130 for that bit. Problem is, when you would eve...

You could make one hell of a frame with this!

20180627_162355.jpg This is a bit of sepele. It started life as 5.4 metres, 10 inches wide a 3 inches deep. I wouldn't fancy hanging it though, it weighs a ton. I should get some decent offcuts, so may try to make some profiles. I wish i had chosen a cooler day to bw lugging these around though. Nick

Re: 'making tax digital'

Yes, 50% off £15. There are 3 different packages. The mid range one i am on deals with payroll and vat. The offers they advertise are for 50% off for 6 months, but when i signed for a trial, they contacted me and offered for the year. I have to say that i would not go back and when it goes up to £15...

Re: 'making tax digital'

I have recently switched to quickbooks so as well as producing invoices etc easily, you can quickly photograph your receipts and attach to records. It will also calculate your vat return for you. I think the package i am on is £15 per month, but i was offered 50% off for first year. It saves me a hu...

Re: Underpinning ash

To answer your last question first, yes you can get timber than is denser and harder to cut. There is nothing you can do and you cannot tell any difference. Could it also be that your blades are losing their sharpness. Again, blades can sometimes blunt quicker than other times. Some woods will blunt...

Re: Twist/warp in frame!

Hi there, If your frame is mitred at exactly 45" and lengths are exactly the same, (given your moulding is true) it then has to be pinning it that is the problem. It has to be one of those elements essentially. How is the join. It might be snug at the top, but check the bottom of the join which...

Re: Very deep frames

The size and choice of moulding for the face of the frame would be useful to know. I would then use: http://www.roseandhollis.co.uk/products/a339/ Whereabouts in gloucestershire are you? I would be happy to machine and help join if you would like help. I am near Badminton. I would choose front frame...

I agree with above. If mitred accurately, there will be no movement without glue.

Very nice. Working with hardwoods is always enjoyable. I have a pair of bedside tables to make using walnut in a couple of months.

What finish do you use the compost on?

Re: Fixing commemoratives

You won't need much but something like this foam tape for number plates will work. Acrylic adhesive will come off perspex and it will not move. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B079X1RHXQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1522659113&sr=8-2-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=black+...

Re: Fixing commemoratives

I would do as prospero suggests. Will stick well, is hidden and you would be able to remove adhesive off perspex if they needed to come out by using white spirit or even nail varnish remover.

Re: Underpinning Hard Woods

I had this problem with a previous underpinner but is solved with my current one which has adjustable clamp pressures. I did the same as prospero and a mitre clamp will save you you a lot of fiddling. To fill small hole, i would just put a dab of glue in the hole and then sand gently over area and i...

Pretty sure that hard wedges not designed for stacking.

For deeper hard woods, i pin, then use a strap clamp (just cheapish ones)

Good luck with it all.

Should be allen key, but may be torx screw fitting. If you have an electric screwdriver, if you get one of these sets, you will find the right bit to use. http://www.frankhoward.com/mobile/product.php?site=froogle&sn=2607017322&google=?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9ravotqP2gIVzrvtCh2qIwzFEAQYAyABEgL25_...

Re: Cassese CS20 Cartridge Pnuematic underpinner

I have made a few mistakes when buying equipment. When i first decided to try framing, i bought a logan mount cutter and soon realised that it was not as accurate and i sold it and got a fletcher. I sold the logan but i lost over £100 as a result. With the cs20, you have an excellent machine, but yo...
