Re: Filling grain on obeche
Surely if the wood grain on obeche is a problem you would be better buying a more expensive timber that doesn't have the same wood grain?
Any savings by buying cheaper obeche are wiped out when putting too much effort into filling the grain or putting on many coats of a finish.

If the stretched canvas sticks out the back just use canvas offsets.

Re: Newspaper - Direct Contact Overlay
The customer was in charge of deciding whether the newspaper was folded in half or not, the undermount width (around 50mm), colour, and frame style (around 30mm wide). I was in charge of the method for mounting the newspaper, and the spacer under the frame rebate. The customer wasn't particularly co...

Re: Newspaper - Direct Contact Overlay
Interesting article John, thanks for sharing.
I'm not totally sure, though, why he's gone for direct contact overlay when he already has the newspaper encased in melinex and 'floating' on its own. Why not just have larger spacers and then use glass that isn't touching the melinex?

Re: Tiles into coasters?
Probably wait until you've got them and then post pictures, but I'm thinking just frame them as normal and then add 4 bumpers on the bottom.
I'm not sure why you would want or need to glue the tiles to something else.

Re: First OS map coming in tomorrow....
You haven't said the size so difficult to give a suitable moulding size, but in general terms it's up to you. Don't be talked into using a moulding that is too narrow as the customer isn't always right. It's possible to use a narrow moulding and add a subframe at the back, but that can be tricky and...

Re: Do you photograph your finished frames? If so, do you publish them?
Does she have a business profile, Keith, as that's her personal profile so the last thing I can see is from 2017. As for the OP, if you search 'photograph reflection' in the search box you will find it has been discussed many times. For me, I normally lie the finished frame on the ground and stand a...

Re: Keencut Ultimat Futura Advice
If the scale is out by 1mm over its length rather than always being 1mm out the adjustments on the keencut won't help. If you adjust the 1mm at 900mm so it's correct it will then be 1mm out at 40mm. I'm not sure it matters for 1mm but as it's a really easy fix I would want it to be correct to start ...

Re: advise for a newbie
I did a flag slightly bigger than that. It was worn and moth eaten so there were bits missing. I got a tailor friend to sew it onto cotton and then stretched that like a canvas. I allowed for around 100mm space around that would be seen plus extra for stretching. I used 4mm plastic glass and then a ...

Re: Framing prints for an exhibition that are different sizes. What would look best?
My worry would be choosing one way or another and then the customer doesn't like it.
Show them examples of both and get a decision.
For what it's worth I think you should always frame to the picture, rather than make a picture fit a certain size frame.

Re: Framing vinyl records and record sleeves
I have a big roll of melinex so I just cut off 4 strips for the corners, passed them through slits hidden behind the sleeve and taped with my ph7 70 tape. The fixings for the car panels are like plastic washers with legs which pop into the hole in the middle and then through the mountboard. There's ...

Re: Framing vinyl records and record sleeves
Here's mine:
The sleeve is held in place by melinex straps on the corners, and the record is held in place by the fixings for car trim panels so it can all be reversed easily if ever required.- Wed 06 Sep, 2023 9:31 pm

Re: Jumbo mount not big enough
You could use a wooden slip under the glass to give the same visual appearance as mountboard.
Mitres could be filled if you wanted a seamless join.
Centrado do a white slip 50mm x 5mm.

Re: Using an underpinner - or not...
The point of underpinning is to hold the join in place while the glue dries, to save the need for clamping. In theory this would allow you to do 5 or 10 frames at a time, but it would be unusual and awkward to have that amount of clamps sitting. My worry about letting the glue dry first and then pin...

1.25% is not a bad rate. If it's working well for you I would just continue.
Imagine you spend just 1 hour looking into new machines then to make it worthwhile you would need to get a rate of 1% or lower (assuming you work for £25 an hour.
