water white glass

Tru-Vue and Denglas both manufacture glass that has UV and ANTI-REFLECTIVE properties. These might not be available in the UK due to lack of interest my most framers. On a special order basis these 2 companies will also manufacture laminated glass (as in an automobile windshield) with both UV and an...

In addition to European and US manufactures, there are several in South America. One that comes to mind is San Marcos.

Steven I have not seen anything like this in normal distribution in the US. With the open cuts it appears to be either cast or hand made. Hand made can have 2 variations. Totally hand carved or compo over a wood base. Am I correct in that it appears to be about 5" wide and has a painted finish?...

I have mentioned this before, here and or on the US Grumble. My local chapter of PPFA had a tour of the original Guardian Industries plant in Carlton, Michigan. Their response to me about this question was that "due to the nature of continious production vs batch production any contamination wo...

I agree that more work is being to substandards than should be by unethical framers. This is no different than any other industry. With that said: or was the instructions of the customer to to the job "as cheep as possible" For this added alternative (I still would not use masking tape) my...

Yes, a CMC is a help with the hair loss. However, when I started we had a employee who still used a draw knife to cut mats and it would be done the same way.............very carefully. BTY, this fellow was just as fast as any of us with a modern mat cutter (Fletcher, C&H, KeenKut). He just had l...

We use what is called a "sling mat" to hold the cards in place. I would use 2 ply Rag due to the thin nature of the cards. The openings are the same size as the cards. The mount windows are cut 5mm smaller such that there would be a 2-3mm overlap of the mount to keep the cards from falling...

Fred You commented on aligning a print in a board being a problem of sorts. We will use a slightly oversized mount board to do the hinging. After the hinges are dry, the top window mount is placed over the oversized board and with a pencil the borders are marked. The backing board is then trimmed to...

The best instructions for hinging is a techincal page in Greg Fremsted's web site for his products FrameSpace, Nori Paste, Econospace etc. http://www.framtek.com There are several technical pages available. I beleive the hinging page was written with the cooperation of a paper conservator with 30 ye...

Coxby, Are you refering to what we in the US call "French Lines" That is, painted lines and panels on a top mount (mat as we call it). If so, we use a thinned acrylic paint and or acrylic based air brush color. Both have a non reactivatable color due to the acrylic base. I first draw all o...

I can think of 2 reasons for bubbles in gesso. 1. a dry base and too much brushing. 2. a poor gesso formula. When I gesso a frame I first apply a thin coat of RGS (rabbit skin glue) at base strength. 16 gm RSG to 180ml pure water. This will vary silghtly with the time of the year and the humidity. M...

I would have attacked the framer in your example for another reason. The framer sold a job with a given standard and then substituted materials and techniques with another (of lesser value and quality). In my mind, this framer cheated the client and got caught. He (or she) got what they deserved (a ...

Have you also noticed that the larger the car, the less they want to spend. Doctors and attorneys are the worst!
What is the current fee charged by attorneys these days on your side of the pond. We would be hard pressed to find one for $150/hr.

If it were an original Picasso, it would be the same low price. We charge by what we do and not what your "free" print cost you.

The system might be ok for an individual. I think the free of service charge limits (deposits -20-, checks-50-, check deposits-100-) are a bit small for most businesses.
At £.50 per....... that is a lot more than our $.15 per.
