Re: Colouring the bevelled edge

I like colouring bevels and find them cost effective, my technique is pretty much the same as Steve, mask off, using 811 removable magic tape, face up using the mount cutter as a guide, turn over so face down, cut window and paint from below. I use regular acrylic paint especially if it’s going to b...

Re: Creative mountcutting and mount decoration

Excellent topic and a bit of a hobby horse of mine and I guess this will not go down too well but I am constantly disappointed on how unadventurous and uncreative so many framers are in this country, it really is quite depressing. First, creative fancy mount cutting and decorating is not needed, req...

Re: Framers Workshops at the Guild Weekend

I just wanted to echo the thanks to the Guild for the workshops, I was surprised how busy it was when I arrived – wish I’d got there earlier. It’s not just new businesses that can benefit, I’ve been doing this for over 25 years and have just spent time this afternoon cleaning the rebate support chan...

Re: Ltd. Company

I converted my business to a Limited Company, on advice from my accountant, it was a combination of tax situation which was better than being self employed and we had two businesses on two sites and it clearly seperated the businesses so if anything happened to one the other should be 'safe'. The is...

Re: Mylar Thickness

Hi, I use 100 micron from PEL for strapping and wrapping, it has worked fine for everything I have done, although I have thought of getting a thinner film for wrapping as it can be a bit 'stiff'. Ideally I think a thicker material, 125 micron would be better for strapping and a thinner 50-75 micron ...

Re: Margin between double pictures

I usually use a ratio of 2/3rds the visible main mount surround, so if 35mm was showing I would use around 24mm.

Re: WHO DRIES THE FLOWERS BEFORE FRAMING?

I'd say unless you know what you are doing don't touch it. I tried it once and as above complete failure and won't be doing it again. There's too much that can go wrong.

Re: identify moulding

For the top one Wessex do a white and ivory versions C2711 and C2715, they used to do a green grey one which I can't see in the catalogue and was more like the one in your photo, depends on the lighting though. Don't recognise the other one.

Where's the like button?

Love the stacked frames especially the off white inner and finish on the outside balanced by the slightly darker more detailed middle frame. Very skillfully done.

Re: Pen tool

You can't do traditional watercolour lines as you have to use standard pens, I mainly use black, gold, silver in varying thicknesses. For proper lines I still use a ruling pen it's also the only way to mix your own subtle colours and get the tramline effect.

Re: Pen tool

I have the pen tool on my Gunnar, it's one of those, sometimes I don't use it for weeks then like now I'm using it on a couple of jobs, one in particular at the moment with a lot of lettering - pen and carved. It's good for putting lines around windows without having to get the ruling pen out, we do...

Re: painting plain wood mouldings

My tip for avoiding brush marks is to use a sponge, kitchen scouers are good when you take the green scratchy bit off. Need to wear gloves. Generally use acrylic paint diluted to taste.

Re: Recommendation of books, DVDs, you tube Etc.

When looking for books you need to check that the framing covered is relevant for your needs. A lot of framing books are aimed at hobby framing, while there is nothing wrong in that the methods and techniques are often not practical for a professional framer, they take too long too be viable. If you...

Re: New to framing

Hi Carl It depends on who you are framing for, if it is just yourself, hobby equipment would be adequate, nothing against it but, it will take longer and more skill and practice will be needed but you can make good quality frames. If you are looking to sell framed work, undertake framing for others,...

Re: "I'm a picture framer"........."Oh"

As it was said above it's how you sell it. I have a number of responses depending who I'm talking to. I have used; I own an art gallery, art dealer, designer, display or presentation designer, I'm also a chief buyer and marketing manager. Been a racing driver too.
