Re: Sealing packages
I've been doing this for years. It doesn't take long and once done you know no bits can get in. It's much easier the handle one unified object than faff about loading separate glass/mount/back into a frame. It's when you try to do this that bits get sucked in. Also when in the frame it's an excellen...

Re: Question about Keen cut Excalibur 5000 board cutter
The legs can be extended yes and you could alway seat the legs in wooden blocks for extra height. But raising the machine would make reaching the upper two-wheel cutter block very difficult unless you are very tall or have very long arms. Mine sits nicely against an 8½' wall. Raising the horizontal ...

Re: Hedgehog method
It should be mentioned that the float method of mounting is not really the ideal way to mount paper-borne artwork. Especially large stuff. It may stay reasonably flat or it may go wavy an curl away from the mounting board at the edges. That's something that can't really be 'cured'. The traditional w...

Re: Making Tax Digital
I've just had a nice lady ring to try and resolve the issue. :D She says it likely an issue with their software. We went through setting up a new online VAT account, but that one wouldn't let me sign in as well. At least I know it's not my fault. Anyhow, she said I could make the payment via ...

Making Tax Digital
OK, here a funny kettle of fish.......... A while ago it was decided that VAT returns had to be submitted digitally, as members are no doubt aware. So I get it all set up on my PC and try to brush-up on the intricacies of Excel. Previously I wrote all my accounts in a book of real paper with a real ...

Stack them neatly in cardboard boxes.
Put the boxes in a big shed for 30 years and then burn them.

Re: underpinner identification help, please
A major shortcoming with these machines is the top pressure pad. It can dent certain mouldings. On my Euro model I made a triangle from ½" thick wood and faced it with cork (polyurethane is better if you can get a bit). This is to spread the load and is placed over the corner when joining. To s...

Re: underpinner identification help, please
The head mechanism looks very like the old Euro range, so I suspect it's a derivative of one of those.
I do have some experience of them and they are basic but tough machines so I may be able to help with
any probs.

Re: Oak supplier advice
I don't use much Oak, but I can heartily endorse Rose & Hollis. If you speak to them nicely they would probably
pick out all matching bits.
* You might want to try Ash for light finishes. It's a tad easier to work with and tends to be more consistent.

Re: Filling grain on obeche
I use a lot of 'No Nonsense' fine surface wood filler from Screwfix. Basically I apply it with a knackered old brush. Dip the brush in water and scrub it into filler then paint it on. Not too wet and not to dry. Then take a cloth and rub it in, taking off the excess. When it's dry, sand off any nobb...

First of all I would try re-seating the blades.
They should be snug where they meet and equal height.

Re: Self Spacers
I use a Keencut straightedge with the rubber inserts. :D Foamcore is notoriously hard to cut clean. You need a good, sharp blade. Blades are cheaper than foamcore. :P It's a good idea to make the first stroke very lightly just to establish the 'track'. Then you can press harder until you get though ...

Re: How to increase rebate depth
I use a great many of these for mounting sticky-out canvases... https://www.lionpic.co.uk/p/8591/Bendable-Fixing-Plates-37mm-Pack-100 They are very easily formed to fit exactly. If you want to conceal the side of the canvas then Rose&Hollis do a good selection of square stripwood which can be ta...

I've used these people in the past and they are specialist art shippers. Not too dear.

Re: hand mitre saws
I cobbled together this setup for £<500. The only disadvantage is that it needs to be a permanent setup. It's also very dusty but a good dust extraction system would cure that. I've been using it for ten years and it speeds up cutting big awkward mouldings considerably. Having two saws avoids the ne...

Re: hand mitre saws
I agree with all the previous advice. I started with a Nobex saw. It was sort-of OK for small mouldings. An artist friend of mine (who was as clueless as I was) pitched up with a heap of moulding he'd bought in a sale. It was big chunky stuff. Can I cut and join 10 12"x10" frames? S...

It's still on the Simons site. Whether they have any or not is anyone's guess. Says 120 on the page.

Have a word with these guys....

I have found them are very good and min order only 100ft. Quick turn around.
The profile is simple and won't need special knives to be made.
