Anyone recognise these?

Good morning everyone - Familiar problem here - these two mouldings have been on the wall for over ten years and the customer wants to match them. they're both around 75mm wide. I've trawled through loads of websites but can't find them. On the off chance I've missed something or you deal with someo...

Re: Clamps

Axminster Tools do a well priced Stanley band clamp which seems to work pretty well - not as good as a Bessey but not nearly as expensive either.

Speak to Marvin Callender at Callender Designs in Poole. They make anything in perspex to your exact size. Had three bespoke display cases made a while ago and the customer was delighted

Re: Business model for lockdown.

If people are looking for an easy way to take remote payments, try SumUp. I've been using it for over a year and they've really upped their game during lockdown. You can now send a remote payment code to a customer and they can pay by card via their smart phone. You can also do remote invoicing, alt...

Re: Glass

Hi Geoff - Don't overburden yourself with stock at this stage. If you order through Wessex you can buy as much or as little as you need. I keep plenty of standard float glass in a standard 1220 x 915 size, which is as big as I would like to be handling. I also keep AR70 and UV99 in stock, but never ...

Re: What mount cutter?

Robert - I use a Keencut Ultimat Futura which is excellent but may be too expensive, although they've been around long enough for there to be some well-priced second hand ones on the market. The predecessor was the Keencut Ultimat Gold, which is also a really good machine, and you'll see lots of the...

Re: Service to Charnwood Guillotine and CS1 underpinner

Dave -
I use Jamie and Mark Griffiths at TGS Repairs for my servicing and am very happy with them - I used to have a CS1 and they serviced that - not sure what's involved with the guillotine.

Re: Frame bowing - any advice please?

If you look at the instructions on the Wessex link, you’ll see that it screws into the original frame giving a really strong combined frame, hence the reason for the slope on the sub frame

Re: Frame bowing - any advice please?

As has already been mentioned, I would use a subframe on this - PW219 from Wessex should fit nicely into this profile. I've got a similar job to do this week. If you don't want to go back to the customer then I would just write off the cost of the subframe but remember to include it next time. I wou...

Re: Difficulties with concave back mouldings ....

With mouldings like this I always go for chop service. Costs more upfront but saves you time and therefore money in the long run. LJ, Lion and Wessex all offer this and saves a lot of sweat and swearing!

Re: Mounting stamps

Mark is absolutely right - condition of stamps is everything and as soon as the gum is compromised the value plummets. Try looking up Hawid stamp mounts - they're a ready made folder style mount used by collectors that encapsulates the stamps and enables you to place a mount around them.

Re: Lining up a cross-stitch

Interesting discussion and lots of useful points. Like Jo, I was always trained never to moisten cross stitches. I am very clear with customers that if they want an item washed or ironed that they do this before bringing the item in for framing. I have never had an item that could not be squared wit...

Re: Mouldings Range

Hi David - If you have gallery experience then you'll know that white mouldings are always popular, particularly with artists. I sell quite a bit of Lion, and like the fact that they are willing to provide free samples which are already fitted with velcro. Their 'Domino' and 'Mono' range in white an...

Re: Help with a cropped image.

Matt - I think you're going to struggle to get a mount round this without it looking cramped. I would consider making a feature of it by either float mounting or shadow float mounting it on a matching or contrasting colour of mountboard and then putting it into the frame with spacers to keep the gla...

Try Wessex - they’ve got a very large CMC that cuts jumbo boards - you can probably have it sent on a regular van delivery run

Re: Paperweights?

I use offcuts of glass. Take eight pieces of 8cm square glass and cover in handy wrap and you have a cheap and easy paperweight. If it gets tatty, just wrap it again. I keep a range of these handy and they are ideal for jobs like float mounting and hinging. Ideal way of using up scraps of glass you'...
