Re: Lighting stain glass

The problem with any kind of strip light will be hot and cool spots (light wise). You need to aim for the same amount of light all over the piece. I'm currently doing a stained glass lit framing job. My solution (with help from my local sign maker) is a sandwich as follows: The stained glass Diffuse...

Re: VAT question

Take a look at fixed rate VAT, the only calculation you make is gross turnover * fixed rate = vat to pay, you also get a 1% reduction in the rate for the first year.

Re: Frame over three metres long

Good advice from robo as ever, only thing I would add is that if you do join the long sides then I'd use a mitred join rather than a butt join as they are easier to disguise/line up.

Anyone fancy this job?

Re: stacking mouldings

We do the opposite of Mark! We start with the inner most frame cut to glass size, re-measure and make the next largest etc etc.

So it's whatever floats your boat.

I don't thing making up a length and mitring is the way to go though ymmv though

I like router matting. Non slip, soft, and catches any bits and bobs which might damage the frame.

Re: Making box frames

I usually use a wide moulding mitred on its side. So a 3" wide moulding becomes a 3" deep box. I then either use it rebate to rebate and route out a rebate on the bottom for the back or use it rebate down and have all the other end (which would normally be the back of the moulding) inside ...

I use a mat pro and could teach you to use it in 10 minutes. Fab bit of kit as well, but we only use up to 3mm mountcard.

Re: Help with Alfamacchine T-350 Double mitre saw

Are you using 34mm timber? Although I don't have this saw I use a brevetti which would appear to use a similar angled scale. Are you measuring to the inner edge of the moulding (furthest away from you) or the outer (nearest you). The difference is the thickness of timber. With the same scale you can...

Re: Frame first or mount?

We are (furtunately) a busy shop, so we batch produce: 1) "Work in" is placed on a "waiting" bench, or in large pigeon holes depending on value/fragility/complications 2) When we have a few jobs waiting (depending on work in obviously) one or two of us does all the mounts, backin...
