Re: glass thickness
If it's a really sturdy frame, at a push I'd use 3mm float. With 4mm float, I'd want the frame permanently fixed to the wall. Otherwise as Grays said, either 4mm or 5mm acrylic would be safer.

Fine Art Trade Guild : Arqadia scholarship : UPDATE
Applications for the Fine Art Trade Guild / Arqadia scholarship closed on 1st June. There were ten applicants for the two places on offer in this round. The applications came from an almost equal number of Guild members and non-members. They have been anonymised and are currently being considered by...

Work levels when the sun comes out : tapsaff
We work in a non-tourist area of Scotland, and suffer from the 'tapsaff' (translation: tops off) syndrome when the sun comes out. Because people don't spend as much time inside when it's nice, we find our work level drops in the summer month(s). Is this unique to us, or do others across the country ...

Re: Fine Art Trade Guild : Mount Decoration Course
You are quite right baughen , no on street parking directly near to the Guild office, it's around 5 minutes away, and is metered. I'm not sure about the maximum length of stay, but I'll find out. I'm sure you are going to enjoy your day though, look forward to seeing you there.

Re: Fine Art Trade Guild : Mount Decoration Course
Morning John London being London, parking is indeed tight. There is both on and offstreet parking within a 5-10 minute walk of the office, and for those who don't want to drive, Wandsworth Town train station is about a 15 minute walk away. I'll try and get an indication of parking costs, and post ba...

Re: "Paid for" advertising
I suppose I'd always thought that Facebook would be the best for 'paid for' promotion - it's a nice combination of visual imagery and personal interaction. As MarkW says though, you need to drive it hard. His comments about using iPhone for loads of business stuff got me thinking about the huge chan...

"Paid for" advertising
We use Facebook as a means of keeping in touch with clients, followed very closely in joint fifth position (!) by Twitter and Instagram. I'll occasionally pay to promote a Facebook post, which admittedly does not bring hordes of new clients through the door. Does anyone have any experience of using ...

Re: Trade waste disposal costs
Hi Grahame - our council stopped collecting trade waste 8 or 9 years ago, and contracted it out to private firms. The first was Enviroscot, which was taken over a few years ago by Viridor. Even the local 'recycling centres' which used to be council run are now run privately too. They used to accept ...

Re: Trade waste disposal costs
Float glass is recyclable. http://jbrecycling.co.uk/waste/flatglass The problem is it can't be mixed with regular 'bottle' glass. Our lot, Viridor, used to collect our float along with bottle glass, then told us we'd need to put it into general waste. They have told us that it is then sorted out at ...

Trade waste disposal costs
Just received my quarterly bill for Trade Waste, and it's one of those 'hidden costs' of running a business that not many people think about. £252 per quarter for a 660l wheeled bin to be emptied once a week. This is the bill for recyclable waste. General waste is a separate 660l bin emptied once a ...

Fine Art Trade Guild : Art + Framing Today
The next issue of Art + Framing Today magazine is off to print at the end of this week. It'll be dropping through letterboxes early in June. We'd be delighted to get member feedback - it's your magazine after all, help us to shape it! You'll find contact details in the mag, or on the Guild website. ...

Mad world indeed! It's not the first time I've had to say we are framers, not magicians! End of the day, you can only do your best with what you are given to work with.

The name was changed to Art + Framing Today, not AFT, and at the moment it's not available for free online, as per John Ranes II CPF GCF comments above. Thank you John for a considered post.

Fine Art Trade Guild event 2016
For anyone who wants to know, the Guild event 2016 was one of the most successful ever. It was held in Stratford-upon-Avon, over a glorious weekend. The Guild Artists Exhibition was officially opened by The Mayor of Stratford. Saturday saw well attended seminars and workshops for both framers and ar...

Re: Arqadia Scholarship
The Guild as it was even a few years ago, and the Guild as it is now is different. That being said, the Guild, like any other organisation needs to work within constraints. There are some things that can be done, and unfortunately some things that just plain can't. PPFA is in that same boat - as an ...

Re: Arqadia Scholarship
I absolutely couldn't agree more, which is why I don't run a Porsche or employ a court jester either! I've mentioned in a previous post that membership of the Guild or any other organisation might not be for everyone, that's for each individual to decide. But for those who feel they can use a member...

Re: Arqadia Scholarship
That's kind of true, and to maintain the qualification, you need to remain a member. If you leave the Guild, you lose the right to use the qualification. The Guild is not the only membership organisation which takes this stand. Most qualification issuing authorities work the same way. It allows at l...
