Re: Filling occasional corner gaps....
That all makes sense.... cheers. Prospero... finished mouldings is something I would like to get away from too, I have bought some unfinished obeche but done nothing with it yet. My perception is that it is incredibly time consuming and the lower cost materials would no where near compensate for all...

Re: Filling occasional corner gaps....
Thanks for all the advice. Alan are you suggesting black acrylic paint mixed with a little polyfilla for black frames? I agree with all that say they shouldn't be made in the first place, I use an old Alpha (1M I think) underpinner that does not have clamps fitted so I line up as best as I can, feel...

Filling occasional corner gaps....
Hi all When I make a batch of 20 or 30 frames, I have 1 or 2 that may have a corner that may have a gap. I am using deep rebate box sections and I think the cause of the problem is not always clamping the moulding in the mitre saw firmly enough (I mean dewalt electric saw, not a guillotine), consequ...

Re: Camera wanted for photographing paintings
I use a Nikon D90 (12mp) which if cropped tightly and carefully focused using RAW can easily print very good quality at A3 or A3+ I will shortly buy a 2nd hand D800 (36mp) which are currently around £900 excluding lens. As previously mentioned the most important thing is the lens, you should not use...

Re: Camera wanted for photographing paintings
Yup, I always shoot Raw and dump them into Lightroom then Photoshop even though I'm getting more and more disillusioned (pissed off) with Adobe and Apple's built in obsolescence and proprietary dictatorship. Had to buy new Macbook Pro (running dumbed down OS Yosemite) and software even though Creati...

Re: Box frame moulding
Ive been asked to quote for 100 800mmx600mm box frames (Christmas stock.. already!), so I too am looking for cost effective moulding. So far I have been using the Pheonix range from Simmons but looking to see if there are any more cost effective options. All in all I think I will use around 300m in ...

Re: GLazing for a large (ish) frame...
Thanks Prospero 2mm would be best for me and customer The frame is for a modern elegant photo so it should be fairly indiscreet. Should the moulding be structurally resistant to flex in all dimensions or is a particular dimension more important than others? e.g bowing away from side of glass, torsio...

GLazing for a large (ish) frame...
I have been asked to frame a picture that is 130cm x 100cm which would be the largest frame I have done to date. I have been using 2mm float glass up until now on frames up to 90cmx70cm in size. Does this larger size mean I should switch to 3mm or thicker glass or possibly to a "plastic" g...

Re: White moulding prep before underpinning?
I finally got some of the Lion (Edding) marker pens, they work well. If there happens to be a slight gap at the join (its happening less and less) I use a little liming wax.
Thanks all for your help...

Re: White moulding prep before underpinning?
Thanks everyone, some good ideas. I was worried about an exact match for the white, as there seems to be so many different whites (well at least as far as mountboards are concerned) but I guess such a small area with a close match would almost be invisible. The Lionpic pen looks ideal... I will buy ...

White moulding prep before underpinning?
Hi All a quick question, when I join prepared black moulding with deep rebate for box frames I mark the outside edges black so that when joined there are no lighter coloured patches of raw wood showing from either small splinters or irregularities, all is good, this method works well for me. However...

Re: Inmes IM30 v Morso
I have been part time framing for 18 months or so. I have now finally acquired underpinner, keencut and Morso but I still favour my dewalt over the Morso for chopping mouldings. The only downside is dust... even with Henry sucking. I generally make several frames of the same size at once, I have mad...

Re: Morso questions....
Prospero thats funny, I wonder how many things are under our noses daya to day that never get noticed. I remember being a passenger in a car with a mate (who was around 40yrs at the time ) on a long journey, he kept cursing when a car came up behind him with headlights on, when I worked out what his...

Re: Morso questions....
It makes perfect sense but unfortunately because I have to glue slips/spacers between glass and mounts I wouldn't be able to adopt the sandwich method, I will try working so that frames are made last, it might save me some hassles. Now I just need to get some clean cuts on the Morso, who do you use ...

Re: Morso questions....
Hi, thanks for all your words of wisdom. The moulding is "bix" as you, or I, say, its actually just some pine wood I was using for practice, I have tried cutting 3 different real mouldings with the same effect. Its just the one that I showed has the effect exaggerated. I have got into the ...

Morso questions....
Hi all I am just about to celebrate my first year making frames. Quality is so much better than when I started and the enjoyment/satisfaction levels are also rising. I have added Foot operate Alpha underpinner (instead of nailing in the side, incredibly easier and such a better finished result) Ulti...

Re: Morso Self Adhesive Metric Scale?
I build a stop guage for my circular mitre saw so I can chop lots of mouldings quickly and accurately. My plans are to add a measure, I was looking at these which may be suitable for you, cant be sure as I dont have a Morso..... yet. http://www.axminster.co.uk/ujk-technology-self-adhesive-measuring-...
