Re: Is it just me..
I can't help but be constantly impressed with the quality of mouldings. I certainly get differences - there's always a margin of error - but considering the manufacturers are working with a material so incredibly variable as wood I'm amazed that mouldings I use from different batches are usually int...

Re: Overhead Lighting
We have high frequency units with daylight tubes in the workshop, and daylight bulbs in the printing area. Really this is for consistency more than anything. Wherever I go with a piece of work in the workshop it's the same. We had old strip lights in the previous workshop, each giving a slight diffe...

Re: Displaying a glass panel with images
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but if it's in a box frame can't the mount board be pinned into the back like any standard frame?

Re: Cold frames
I had loads of problems when I had an unheated workshop. The worst was that the glass seemed to become more brittle. Maybe it was especially cold at the time, I haven't had the same since but it was a real nightmare. Every sheet I tried to cut just shattered. As soon as I bought a heater the problem...

Re: Advice on 'going pro'
A drill and a crowbar. To get the post out that is. I used to work as a landscaper, briefly, and if you couldn't pull it out then just destroy it and get out the bits.

Re: Pricing Software For Mac
I think 80's and 90's is the key - macs were far better then but now there's no competition in my book. Macs (albeit beautifully designed) are expensive and rely on exclusivity and planned obsolescence of software. Very powerful PC's and monitors can now be bought for less than macs and microsoft ne...

Re: Does the forum think?
I thought by the title that this would be a discussion involving Descartes. Perhaps not. :Slap: I've been in more or less the same situation where clients from London comes down to their country homes with frames to copy. I just phone the number on the label and ask. They've always been more than he...

Geoff,
Your frames, I think, look great - I hope I'll be able to do similar things one day.
However, your photos are rubbish, I can rarely tell exactly what they are.

I think it was something in the region of £2600 + costs. Another thing I had my eye on that went beyond my reach.

I did go along for a look and I'll say the hotpress looked pretty tidy. I briefly had my eye on it but I don't have much cash floating about at the moment. I think you got a good buy there.

A question regarding the staining, what conditioning should be done first? The staining looks fine to me, although I am just looking on my phone so I could well be missing something.

Re: Rats
I had a rat sitting on my windowsill the other day. I was at my computer, I turned round and the little bugger was just sat there staring at me. He probably went to his ratty friends and said a very similar thing about me. I don't have any food in here so I think they were just using it as a thoroug...

Re: Materials to start with?
It's exactly what you say it is - a minefield. When I started i just got a couple of sticks of square flat plain woods to experiment cutting and joining. I found that did me until I started getting customers in. If you're framing for yourself then just get a couple of sticks of something you like th...
