Re: Do you photograph your finished frames? If so, do you publish them?

Lighting works best if you can get it coming in from the sides. If you can only photograph at night, then change your top light to a 1250lm daylight bulb first. Then use an Anglepoise light, with the same type of bulb, to give you a source of light coming from the side. Cover the cowl of the lamp wi...

Re: Do you photograph your finished frames? If so, do you publish them?

I would say, go ahead and photograph any work with which you are particularly proud of. Then maybe post it on here in the 'good, bad and ugly' section or 'That Friday Feeling'. You could start an Instagram account showing your work. If it's general service framing, you would get more views and follo...

Re: working with thin mouldings

As already mentioned, a sub-frame is the more elegant solution to your problem. You said that you only have a hand operated guillotine and some sort of simple v-nailer. To allow for that, you could buy a simple mitre box and hand saw from Screwfix. Fullscreen capture 27102023 90651 AM.bmp.jpg Fullsc...

The link to PCM on Google doesn't seem to work, so go on to the PCM Facebook page and pick up the link to their web-sit there.

Then scroll down and you'll come across the articles featured in their Sept. issue, ie. Sales Strategies - What Customers Want.

Re: Ready made backs

You can attach those press-on hangers to an MDF board and without having to buy the rather expensive tool. But you do need some sort of an anvil first. I used a 12" square of 1" thick steel. I had to order this from a metal workshop. Maybe ask at a farriers about old anvils. If you can get...

Re: THAT FRIDAY FEELING!

OK, I'll show mine. I was asked to make a series of period frames to re-frame some of the Royal charters granted to one of the Cambridge Uni. colleges. Some dated back to the 13th and 15th century. The frames agreed upon were based on a traditional English reverse gothic style with applied gilding o...

Re: CMC cut mounts - is this acceptable?

Very wise decision to contract out the mounts in the first place.
Saves you a lot of faffing around.
But ..
how did you find this crew?

Re: Where do solenoid noise mufflers go on 2 position Minigraf 4?

Seeing no one else is helping, have you looked at the Minigraf handbook exploded diagrams, from Lion?
Google it and that might show where to put the silencer.

Re: Cleaning Up an Old Frame

Thank you, iorek for the compliment. There is definitely a benefit in posting say, reels on Instagram. It does take a lot of dedication however and I found that after a brief period of enthusiasm it's too easy to move on and forget about keeping up the posts. I think the real benefit comes with cons...

Cleaning Up an Old Frame

I finished this frame a few weeks ago. IMG_3490.JPG Whilst there was a lot of work involved in remaking all the losses and various other repairs and re-gilds, most of the time spent was on cleaning up the grimy gilding. During some previous 'restoration' it had been over-cleaned in places and then d...

Yes, we had Justin in the house, yesterday.

He talked of clean work-benches, swept floors, organised workshops.

'Made me feel quite uncomfortable.

Totally agree with Justin.

It's a B&B letter - bullshit and bluster.

Re: Gold Slip / Should it touch the artwork?

Your idea of using a mountboard barrier is probably the best, What harm can it do, even if the slip is an inert material. If you want to be a bit precious, consider that the pressure adhesive on the foil tape may or may not be to the highest standards of conservation. When you mentioned - "pres...

Re: Wiping dust from photographs

This isn't your fault and has nothing to do with your workmanship. You already mentioned that the mount was a bit 'raggedy'. That's where the problem lies - a cheap mass-produced mount, poorly cut and shedding flecks onto the photo. It's a graduation photograph, bless. Who gets one of those? My advi...

That's Moon Gold, water-gilded and rubbed back over a dark red bole.

You can get it from either Gold Leaf Supplies or Wrights of Lymm.
