Re: Moulding ID

Not so many embossed mouldings around these days, but Simons 000S/444 is still listed on their website, which may be o.k. if you don't mind a little bit darker mahogany finish.

Re: Removing lacquer

Removing lacquer is risky. You don't know the chemical composition of the laquer, therefore you don't know the best solvent to remove it. Also if the moulding includes lacquer and colouring and that is removed when removing the lacquer this can be a problem. Best if you can avoid getting into too mu...

Re: Wanted: Workbench (ideally with mountboard storage), mountboard storage and plan chest - Wales area

I made my own, as I was broke at the time. My first shop was quite small, my secnd shop is even smaller, but if you make you own you can customerise it to best suit your available space. I made the basic framework out of 2" x 2" timber cut on the Morso, which makes it much easier.

Re: hand mitre saws

I've also got a nobex hand operated mitre saw and also the measuring extension, which I bought from Lion. I can't tell which make the extension was, but if you are getting one of these saws, I can definitely recommend the measuring extension, as the make live so much easier. It's just too easy to ma...

Re: hand mitre saws

My assumption is that we are taking about normal trade type woodworking mitre saw which can be bought from most tools shops and suppliers. Before anyone goes rushing out to buy an electric mitre saw, there are a few things to consider: 1. Small hobby grade electric mitre saws are mde for DIY woodwor...

Re: Anybody recognise this?

Hi john,

You are right! My moulding length was a lot wider than 60mm. It was also too high for the maximum height of the morso blades, I had to pul them up further by hand!

Re: Anybody recognise this?

I bought some a long time ago in a job lot from a framer which was closing down, it originally came from Euro mouldings. The Frinton Gallery have it in various widths in the mouldings calalogue, these are hand made mouldings, not all that cheap but beaufully produced. I could not sell the lengh whic...

Re: Swept Frames.

When sweopt frame were easier to get, but not that easy to sell and get a decent price, I never had much success with them. Now they are harder to find, would I be right in guessing that maybe this is the time when they are like to be in demand and maybe more of a sellers market with the potential t...

Re: Thick repair wax

I haven't bought any for years. I got an old tin, but the label has peeled off, i think it was imported from another country. It was great becase you could mix the colours. it was not made for the framing trade.it was really cheap. I'm pretty sure that it is not made anymore, I was already expecting...

Re: Thick repair wax

Thanks Jerome,

That's quite interesting. Stearite powder used to be used in electrical insulators. It's a bit like powdered ceramic, maybe I could make some by grinding up something!

Re: Swept Frames.

WOW, I've never even heard about this punk art thing. Do much do these punk art swept frames need to look like the really traditional frames? Maybe, you might be able to make something which is adequate for your own market. Perhaps even using some of your left over bits of moulding, isn't the punk t...

Thick repair wax

I used to buy a really thick repair wax some years ago, which set to a very hard durable finish. It's no longer obtainable anymore. I no longer have any, I am being sounded out to do some repair work for a couple of previously regular customers in the interior design business, so I need a way of thi...

Are you open again Mark? I have been getting the inside of my shop sorted out, but I can hardly walkand need to walk with a four pronged stick, I have problems with my balance when standing up. My accountant has given me a deadline of the end of november to get my accounts sorted and I need to conc...

Moulding chevron sample sizes

I have recently been making some new moulding samples, to be honest the old ones are no longer looking as good as they once did and are propably no longer fit for purpose. I've not made many so far, but the outside dimension of each side has been chosen to be 230mm long, (almost 9 inches) which is s...

Re: working with thin mouldings

I have never been happy about fixing D rings to backing boards. Backing boards don't not remain stable supporting any significant load over time, when the load is supported in that way. O.K. screwing D rings into adequate strengh sub frames, even into adequate strength frames - no problem! A small s...

That looks like it could be a Gieli machine, made in italy. They always used to the suppoerted with spares by Wessex pictures. They have a reputation as very solid and good machines.

Re: Cassese Underpinner Parts

Two tips. I stopped using the 12mm and 15mm Cassesse wedges long ago, because the horizontal crease which they have pressed into the wedge quite often causes jams and this means that I have strip down the machine to un-jam it. I now re-load the empty wedge magazines, which seem to work better than t...
