Re: Taking card payments using smart phone
I'm using a payleven card machine with a Galaxy S3 on similar terms to the iZettle one. It's just the same as a normal reader but without the contract. We're a gallery as well so we're able to take it to art fairs as its completely mobile. I would recommend it to anyone, although there is a turning ...

Re: What do you do if...
I just had a very similar thing in. A beatiful pencil drawing with a full strip of masking tape across the top, sticking it to the mount. I was able to get this off fine, but then found that it was stuck to the mount with double sided tape as well. :Slap: I just handed it back, nothing I was willing...

Rollers vs. vacuum press
This may well have been covered here, probably several times over but I can't find it if it has. Now, I use a JM34, it gets a fair bit of use and certainly plays a vital roll (no pun intended) in making me money. But I've never thought 'I wish this did more' or 'I wish this did things slightly diffe...

Re: What do you use to clean glass ?
I agree with Prospero there, I never use any compressed air in the workshop (apart from the underpinner, but the compressor is in the other room). I do have a separate room where I can do sanding, use air tools etc. Having air flowing in the workshop always seems to increase the appearance of flumbs...

Re: WANTED: Frame Making Apprenticeship
I would approach John Jones in your position. http://www.johnjones.co.uk/about/work-for-us/ Doesn't seem to be many trainee level opportunities at the moment but they're the cat's banana from my point of view. As I understood it from when I graduated from Bournemouth a few years ago they do good tra...

Re: What do you use to clean glass ?
Just micro fibre cloths. They seem to last a fair while before they get a bit streaky. I spray a little 'Method Glass' from Waitrose onto the cloth seems to work a treat. When they do get a bit greasy I just stick them in the wash.

LED light sheets would be the only thing I would choose. Really not cheap though.
I get mine from LEDlightsheet.co.uk, very helpful folks. Saved me a lot of time and money messing about trying to sort out light spots and reflective backs.

Second go lucky, hopefully that's it .
I'm open to offers, but I'm looking for £450 for the both.
I'm in Gillingham in North Dorset.

Re: Wanted underpinner
Hi Alexis, I'm selling my Minigraf m3 with a 50l compressor. They're not new by any stretch of the imagination, but they work well. The compressor needs a new exhaust filter but its otherwise good. There's a few boxes of v nails with it. 20131125_133637.jpg I can't seem to attach a pic of the compre...

Re: Morso not cutting cleanly
Something I found helps is to run a bead of silicon (sorry..I know it's a bit of a curse word) down the gap between the two adjustable fences. This can help support the back from flaking out. It won't cure all mouldings and you'll have to replace it regularly, but it's helped on a lot of mine.

Re: Paper cuts
This isn't quite framing related but Prospero's post reminded me. I used to work in a lighting factory as a paint sprayer painting industrial light fittings. While I was spraying my co-sprayer was moving some sheet metal and put it down by letting it slide past his fingers. I knew nothing of it (bei...

I use 3M tack pads, but i'm sure they're better than I need. And more expensive as well.
I'm sure you can get masses of them for pennies from fleabay or toolstation or screwfix..

Re: Glass & sheet cutting
I do have a wall cutter, but I never use it. I've never got on with shuffling full sheets of glass behind the cutter track without chipping corners or worse. I built a dedicated bench for cutting AR glass and now I cut all my glass there, suits me much better. It's a sloping top with a non-slip rubb...

Re: fine art degree grad looking for work
Hi Tim,
Firstly thanks for quoting me on that Black walnut moulding a couple of weeks back, sadly my customer didn't go for it.
Secondly John Jones have a few vacancies, can't get better than them in my opinion.

Re: Dust etc
Flumbs seem to appear and move contrary to the laws of physics. They can be pretty horrendous. The revolution for me was tack rags. I clean the glass and just before I assemble the whole sandwich I wipe the glass with a tack rag and put them together. I rarely have a problem now. 8) The tack rags ca...
Re: USP
Hi Adam, My experience is limited and I'm sure there are other views on here regarding how to set up, but I think any business needs to find a niche in the market to succeed. To find your USP you might go to every framer in a 10 mile radius (depending on the density of the local population..) and fi...

I don't think you'd find many willing to train their competition AND pay them for the privilege - be paid for it would be more likely. I'm under 20 miles away and run a one-to-one course if you're interested https://scenes.biz/framersdirectory/index.php?method=showdetails&list=advertisement&...

Re: Start up advice
Hi Adam and welcome to the forum. That is a lot of questions. My first instinct is to echo Steve and say get some experience with an existing framer. You'll get experience, knowledge of practices, equipment and dealing with customers. And be paid for it. I'll try and answer your questions directly t...
