Re: Marketing

Have a look at Google Adwords, fundamentally a way to ensure that your website appears at or near the top of a relevant Google search. It does cost but on a cost-per-click basis you only pay when someone actually clicks on your advert to open your website. Average monthly cost for us £12. I wouldn't...

Re: Mobile framing service

I started off visiting customers with an array of chevrons and mounts but found that by the time you have loaded the car, driven there, unloaded, had a cup of tea and eventually arrived back home most the morning had gone. I also found that can you get called out just to a collect a small frame for ...

Re: Morso blade sharpening

Mainline for me too, I believe their blade sharpening machine is actually manufactured by Morso.

Problem with Wessex and Centrado is you are likely to have a good couple of weeks delay before your blades re-appear, Mainline usually turn round the same week.

Re: Separating business for VAT

Agree with prospero turn over is what goes through your till and when this hits £85,000 you need to register for VAT. Gross profit is sales minus cost of sales (what goes through your till minus what you paid for goods that you sell).

Re: Separating business for VAT

You can use the VAT Margin Scheme which allows you to just pay VAT on the profit you make on a non VATable purchase. So in your example you would pay VAT on your £9 commission ie £1.50, you do need to keep a record of non VAT purchases and when you sell said items, also you cannot give a VAT receipt...

Re: Separating business for VAT

I believe it comes down to customer base. If you have the same customers then it is one business if different customers then can be separate businesses. In the hairdressers case each partner probably had their own customers but just shared a premises.

Fire proof framing

Been asked to provide a 'fire proof' frame for a picture to go into the communal area of a care home.

I'm thinking metal frame, what about glazing? Anyone else been here?

Glass handling gloves

What glove do you use when handling glass?

The builders gloves seem to have some form of oil coating that is difficult to remove from coated glass in particular.

Re: Joints opening at the back

When fitting newly sharpened blades I always try and ensure the blade bolts and fairly central through the holes in the blades. It is easy for the blades to appear lined up but when you look the rear most bolts are high in the blade recesses, the blades will then not hit the moulding at the designed...

We've been using Estlite for several years. It is easy to use, reliable, good support from John and importantly no ongoing costs.

Anyone know anything about the EU General Data Protection Regulation coming in next month, specifically how it applies to a typical small framing operation that only hold names and phone numbers?

Underpinner clamps not retrating

I have a CS199MXL (pneumatic) on pressing the pedal the clamps operate normally but on releasing the pedal they do not retract. I find that if I loosen pipe number 2 on the pedal the clamps do retract. Is this a pedal issue?

The hammer that presumably pushes the point does not retract. I've tried cleaning and a bit of silicon spay but no joy. Any thoughts?

Anyone had any experience with Handepay, particularly in relation to card processing? Apparently they will beat Worldpay on price and pay any exit fees.

Re: Manually operated cold laminator

I agree with baughen you don't have a spare hand to turn a crank handle. Plus there are always second hand, often hardly used, Jetmounters (electrical version) up for grabs at prices that probably beat the manual version.

Re: Glass pricing

Estlite doesn't have a separate backing board pricing structure, it assumes this is incorporated into the glass price. We incorporate our 'usual' back board into the glass price.

Re: Glass pricing

On main Estlite screen push the 'Options' button then select the 'Prices' tab. You'll see the Glass table where you add the glass description and as Steve says the price for a 40 x 50cm piece and a minimum price, remember to include the price of your backing board in these figures
