Re: Framing a Large Silk Scarf

A layer of woollen felt could be used for padding and friction which would constitute a 'protein' base similar conservation level to unbuffered mountboard, and of course the whole thing will be moth heaven!

Re: Framing a Large Silk Scarf

Applying, or appliqueing, the silk scarf to the already stretched base means that the fabric is not put under great tension. My customer asked for padding. A feature or risk with silk is that a sharp needle could pierce a thread and then applying tension could cause a ladder or run. A fine ballpoint...

Re: Framing a Large Silk Scarf

Using padding makes the stitching a little easier as it's not stitching onto a flat surface.

Re: Framing a Large Silk Scarf

I did one recently, batting, or quilting, covered with an inexpensive lining fabric, these were stretched/ wrapped over mountboard, glued on the back, scarf stitched around the edge, using silk thread, through the hem on the scarf to the lining fabric, which provides friction so it did not need stit...

Re: Bespoke or Custom?

I've always been entirely happy with bespoke, but didn't feel it was a widely understood description in general public use, and now seems to be being misused in USA. I think custom is an excellent alternative.

Re: Making a coaster

I make lace and wouldn't flatten and squash it between two bits or acrylic or glass, but I know ladies who churn out lace and need to have it 'presented' at a reasonable p rice so they can give it as gifts. You can advise but it's their decision.

Re: Bottom weighted mounts...

As a bespoke picture framer, I'm used to and expect to have 'extra work' and essentially just about everything that comes through my door is different, everything gets assessed on its individuality. That's a very interesting observation about the impact of a big block of foreground. But I would stil...

99% of the jobs I bottom weight, not a lot, maybe only 10 % extra, mounts look narrower at the bottom otherwise,

I score and cut glass by hand but the principles are the same, my two pennyworth is: don't forget glass cutting and snapping goes wrong and is affected by the cold.

Re: Dibond mounting, Hotpress or Jetmounter?

Hi Chris I will be interested to hear what others say, but my initial thought is that the Orange peel effect is via vacuum/suction and the structure of the board, reducing pressure may help, and a more 'open' porous surface paper, which I guess smooth shiney papers do not have. Not sure what effect ...

If y o u don't have an instruction manual you can probably download a copy from casesses website, I had a jammed nail last week (casesse 1) and it was very easy to remove the block once I had the instructions.

How is it fixed to the block? Is the actual artwork image square? My feeling would be to try to work with the existing artwork and fill in with something in t h e out of square parts. Could you post a picture?

Re: How to unroll a print

Adding to previous post, have a sheet of tissue that you can lay on top as you unravel, doesn't hurt to wear cotton gloves too, have strip offcutsof mount board the width of the print to help flatten as you go, which you might want to put weights on, use a tube which is wider than the print and pret...
