Re: Dark stain

If you get van dyke crystals you can match the colour to suit.
I use liberon waxes.

Re: Clamps

For normal framing you shouldn't need a clamp which is why I asked about underpinning. The pins hold together the pieces of wood until the glue sets. I probably make between 5 or 10 frames a day, and I only need my clamps maybe once or twice a week, it is normally for really tall moulding just to ho...

Re: gluing wood prior to staining and varnisting.

I don't follow, are you worried about the glue on the mitres spilling out onto the face of the wood?

Re: First Canvas Stretching job - guidance please

I normally order stretcher moulding and cut and join them myself. At that size I would be thinking about a support bar in the middle. As long as your surface is clean you shouldn't have an issue with the the artwork, it will only crack if it has not been prepared right by the artist. I had one that ...

Re: Slip as frame possible?

As long as it has a rebate it should be okay as a frame.

Centrado have an angled one that width, or you could always get an unfinished moulding and stain or paint it white.

You can buy Daler chevron's from Lionpic if that's any use? There doesn't seem to be a min order anymore either
That's helpful, thanks.

Re: Daler mountboard corner samples

Thanks Steve. LJ only do packs of mountboards so I would have to buy 5(?) sheets of each colour whereas Centrado will split them.

I could make my own but again I would need to buy one of each colour so maybe 50 sheets at around £6 each for a full set.

Daler mountboard corner samples

Does anyone have a spare set of Daler mountboard corner samples? Arqadia was always my go-to board when supplied by Holroyd but now Centrado has taken over they don't supply Arqadia or LJ, so I've been told to buy Daler but I've been looking for a set of samples for over a year and still haven't bee...

Re: Moulding Chevrons wanted

I get my samples free of charge from Centrado, and Holroyd before that.
I normally get 1 metre length then I can cut them and join them to see how they cut.
Have you tried Centrado?

Re: Does anyone recognise this image?

Google reverse image search doesn't bring up anything.

I presume you can't get a close up of the title or the artist name?

Re: Postcard viewed from both sides

Either of your methods would work, only issue between 2 pieces of glass is how to fix it to stop it sliding down. I've done it before with 2 pieces of plastic glass, so the static held it in place (it was a papercut item) although a postcard might be heavier and slip down. If it's between 2 pieces o...

Re: Paperweights?

I have a few small plastic tupperware tubs on the counter, 2 for screws, 2 for d-rings, and 2 for ferrules, so I just use them if I ever need paperweights.

Re: Tiny workspaces

My workshop is 5m x 3m and I moved there from a massive old garage. There isn't a lot of room but the only thing that really bothers me is that I have to cut the glass on the floor. My morso is along one length and the lengths of moulding are stored above it. My bench is at the other side in front o...

Re: Width of mount

Over the years I've seen a few 'rules': mounts must not be the same size as the frame mounts must be larger on the bottom than on the other three sides There are no hard and fast rules so you can play about with what you think looks good, what your customer think looks good, and meet somewhere in th...

Re: Mouldings getting dented

I have a pneumatic underpinner and I find that if it is turned up too high I can damage the face of the moulding. I have it around 3 - 4 for most mouldings, up to around 5 - 6 for hardwoods. Sometimes I get dried glue on my pad and that can damage the moulding so make sure to wipe off any glue that ...
