More Interesting Frames....

Postby prospero » Thu Dec 21, 2017 1:09 pm

This is one I have been working on since last Christmas.

The silvery bit uses black acrylic gesso which is literally finger-painted on to produce a swirly texture.
The silver is applied and wiped back to reveal the high points. It looks better in the flesh as the light
reacts according to the viewing angle and shows different colours.

A bit OTT for a lot of things but I think it works well with the picture. :D

Hi Peter,

That's a really nice effect and I think that the effect has plenty of potential for variations on the same technique. Have you looked into using iridescent paints as well as metallic paints.

I bought various colours of iridescent paints just to try them out, this was perhaps a couple of years ago, maybe more. I was told about them by another framer, who told me to mix them with black. The black paint that I chose to use was process black, which is a transparent black and the results were very classy looking, with the iridescent effect varying with both the viewing angle and the way in which the moulding catches the light.

To date, I have not made a frame using this effect, mostly because my health has not been too good these last couple of years. However your finger painting technique might be the inspiration to make me do something about this.

BTW, I really like the frame - great job!

I made this up as I went along. I was trying to avoid curves so all the mouldings have flat angles.
The outer edge is a bit of ancient box (4-shaped) moulding, mitred 'wrong' way.

I wanted red in it somewhere, but not too much. I painted the panel red and then dragged black over it.
Came out quite well - nice graduated effect.

Peter, two great looking and imaginative frames that suit the images so well

What moulding did you use to go under the "silvery bit" :?:

Peter.

The inner silvery bit is R&H A97 pine. The outer bit is an old Ashworth&T one that I've had for years. It's Ramin, so
it must be fairly ancient. They may still do it.
