punched leaf cassetta frame in black and white

Post by Geoff »

This is a punched leaf cassetta frame in water gilt white gold. I have shown this in black and white simply because it emphasises the leaf pattern better than in colour. Another one was shown on a previous post but because of reflection the design was hardly visible.

Nice frame,Geoff.
After you gessoed the carvings, did you have to re-cut the gesso and does this blunt the tools?
Iv'e never tried to do scroll-work like that. Of the time taken to make the frame, what percentage goes into creating that effect?

Geoff,

Your frames, I think, look great - I hope I'll be able to do similar things one day.
However, your photos are rubbish, I can rarely tell exactly what they are.

With this simple centred scroll carving there was no need to re cut any of it unlike a more decorative carving where you would have to hone in on detail. Was tidied with wet and dry paper however. The frame is made using a half lap joint and the design itself comes from an original much lager Pre Raphaelite frame that was scaled down to work with this one. The design itself took me about an hour to do using two different tools..One more fine round punch outlined the design...while a small square one filled the outside of the design. Once finished... just the design was burnished using an agate which is why it stands out on the photograph. Thank you for your comments
