I thought i would post another one. I am always keen to advocate hand finished frames, but realised i rarely posted any of my finished work. I always worried (previously with certain members) that members would criticise my work.

BTW, i would always welcome advice and what i could have done better/differently. This is how we learn, and i don't think framing is something you can ever stop improving, finding new techniques etc.

I am on a woodworking forum, and there is a thread (which has 100's of pages) called "the last thing you made". I think, and this is not about just hand finished frames, we could share more finished frames.

Anyway, here is a domed obeche frame, finished with black acrylic. No gesso, as i then apply liberon silver gilt cream all over. As soon as applied, i get liberon neutral wax and wax and buff like crazy. It removes the silver except in the grain, leaving a finish that i quite like. It has a bit of an industrial look about it.

It has that 'industrial' look relevant to the subject. Quite minimal.
If I wanted a similar design, but 'bigged up' a tad I would apply that finish to a flat section edged with two
complimentary mouldings with the silver applied more generously - and a off-white liner.

Or rusty.
That was on a loco painting but you can't see it.

Yes, that rusty look would have worked a treat.

Will be using a white liner on 2 this week!

That's a very imaginative way of working with the otherwise very boring wood grain on obeche.

I like both examples

Being very nosey, it would be interesting to know the cost of the two frames. Not that I suggest, for one moment, prices are quoted.

I love that Alan, yes OTT, and it will require something specific to suit it, but a cracking finish.

The full frame. As it happened the customer didn't like it and I had to do a green frame.

Looks fantastic. Can only assume customer is colour blind if they want green.

Beautiful frames, and fascinating to hear the thought processes.

Seeing other frames does inspire me to keep trying new finishes.

This one is for a pencil sketch. Simple black frame, with silver liner. It was actually a wessex obeche frame cut through my table saw to work as a liner.

Instead of a double mount, went with matching slip. Again using a silver gilt cream.

That's a good example of turning an every day moulding in to something special

It's one of the few moulding I buy these days by the 100ft because it is popular and good quality and a good price. Like you, I use it in a number of ways including stacking with small and large gold mouldings and silver and gold gilt cream.

I recently framed one of those deliberately aged world maps 5ft x 3ft. Too big for me to laminate so I had Wessex do it. They did a great job on display board and at the right price. I stacked the black moulding inside a very wide smooth gold scooped moulding and it looked great. This job was for an Interior designer who, although very fussy, pays well.

You can do it directly from your phone (I think). I never got the hangment of that.

I upload phone pics to my One Drive cloud storage. This is synced between my PCs so I can download them.

Once on the PC you can crop/resize/enhance the photo.

Click "Attachments" tab at the bottom.
Click "Add Files"
A window will open allowing you to navigate to the photofile (usually .jpg)
Place the cursor in the right position in the post.
Click "Place Inline"
The file appears between tags[]
Preview it if you like....

No need to be scared of over sized framing work as long as you have the necessary work space otherwise these large jobs will clog up your workshop.

These days I don't get many jobs that size but when I do there is an upside. Firstly, it was a stacked frame and over 30ft of moulding was sold. Making the frame and assembly was my main input. As I mentioned, the laminating was carried out by Wessex and the map was glazed with acrylic cut by a local company.

With my usual mark up on the moulding, backing, sundries plus my labour and not too greedy profit on the laminating and acrylic, made the job very worth while.
