anti-virus software

Post by mikeysaling »

Anyone got some recommendations for AV software ? For the last 4 years I have used a product called The Shield Deluxe . Problem is that each year (to renew it) you have to delete the old version and install the new - which is a PIA. A bigger problem is that when i run a full scan it crashes my vista 32 bbit Dell  :xcomputer: The answer from this company is that the previous version was not completely uninstalled and some items still remain in the registry  Could i edit (manually) the registry to remove two entries which they suspect (know) are still there alongside the new version similar entries. I do not want to edit my registry manually it's fraught with danger IMO. They have no other answer other than to uninstall the new version - then get a registry cleaner to clean up and therefore remove the non-applicable offending items - then reinstall a new updated version - This is all a pain Sooooooooooo

I'm looking for reco's for new AV software

Anyone ?

I use the free version of AVG which was recommended to me by a software engineer but there are always problems deleting AV software.

I had a machine running Comodo which is another free one and tried replacing it with AVG as I got annoyed with all the pop ups from Comodo. In the end it would not run either and I ended up changing the computer :xcomputer:

avast is good avg also good, both have free versions.

My personal preference is avast, I have installed it on many computers and never had any complaints.

I run the mobile avast on my phone and the mac version on the mac , when I had a Linux machine I ran it on that as well.

I once put avast on a machine that had not been running any AV did a boot scan and it found 148 viruses, keyloggers, worms and so on.

there are some really nasty viruses for both mac and Linux .

Macs in particular are being targeted now .
beware of the compression bomb this will be a small file the will unpack it's required self but continues to unpack until you entire hard drive is completely full, the only cure is to wipe and reinstall the OS.

I am a mac user and a windows user, I would not run either without AV, apple are full of s*** their suggestion that their OS is immune to attack makes people not bother with AV.

I think it depends on which operating system you are using, most of the Mac viruses that you are talking about are going after Intel processor machines. I don't use any Intel equipped machines personally.

I have a old G4 power mac , was great in it's day, now it just sits on my desk looking pretty, I might fire it up tomorrow and blow the cobwebs out of it.

I use the free version of AVG. I've never had any problems, so I guess it's o.k.

If you are with Barclays Bank they give a free subscription to Kaspersky Internet Security.

Weeds out all the spam emails and good virus and trojan blocker as well as firewall.

Probably the only thing from Barclays you don't have to pay for directly.
